I wore a full sleeve shirt and a pair of full length jeans whenever I went in public which is what I was wearing now.
“Hey Alex,” I heard a voice say behind me. I turned. It was Victoria Wells, my enemy. I was in the park waiting for my friends to come.
“What do you want?”
“Oh nothing, just something to embarrass you.”
I’m pretty sure that at that moment my face went blank.
“Aw….” She said, “Poor Alex has something to hide.”
“I do not!” I yelled a little too loud.
“I’m going to find it out and then you’ll wish that you were never even born. My name is Victoria, meaning Victory. I always win.”
“I-” She cut me off by flipping her hair and leaving. A few seconds later, Hanna and Miranda made their way over to me.
“Was that Victoria?" Hanna said.
"Yeah, never mind, continue."
"So,” Hanna said, “We didn’t really get to know about the fire.”
“I bet Claire’s not going to want to listen to it.”
“Who said she’s even coming?”
“She’s not?”
“She just messaged me and said that she can’t come. Family stuff. You know how she gets.”
I did know. Claire cares not only about herself but also about her family. She is very sensitive about her family even though they don’t care about her. She still thinks that there is hope for her family. Her parents are divorced and her sisters keep on fighting with each other. Trust me, there’s no hope left. If you say a comment like ‘Hey, your mom should wear read’ you will never hear the end of it. She’s a very weird girl.
“Alright then,” I said, “I’ll tell you guys about the fire. Let’s go. We’ll take the short route. I know the way.”
“So do we.” They said.
We left the park and took the short route. I started to tell them about the fire.
“I went home and started to read a book. I thought I smelt smoke. I brushed it off and just assumed that my mom was cooking something. I had seen her when I entered the house.” I gulped. I wanted to tell my friends about it but it was just too sad.
“Are you alright, Alex?”
I wiped the tears that were threatening to fall. “Sure, let me continue. The smell became stronger and I went downstairs to see what it was. My mom wasn’t in the kitchen so I went to her bedroom. It was on the same floor as the kitchen. The moment I entered her bedroom I saw this huge wall of fire between us. I don’t what I was feeling at that moment. I told her to get out but she didn’t listen. Eventually I got out of the house and so did she but while getting out of the house I got a few burns. So that’s the sto-”
“Watch out!” Miranda yelled. She pushed me and I hit the hard ground with her on top of me. I heard a loud bang and looked at where it came from.
Inches away from me, was a large brick made up of many smaller bricks. The large piece itself was about as big as a seven year old boy.
Then a few things clicked in my mind. This brick had landed on the exact same spot I had been standing on seconds ago. I looked up and saw a construction building. If Miranda hadn’t pushed me out of the way, I would be dead. I got up and brushed dust off my pants.
“Thanks Miranda, thank you so much.”
“Don't mention it, you’re welcome.” None of us said anything. We all just walked to Hanna’s house.
I looked at their faces and all I saw were blank faces. Even I didn’t know how to react. I mean, how does a person react when they have been saved from being dead. I was glad that I wasn’t dead and I figured that I was still in shock from what had happened. It was a lot to take in. I just couldn’t bring myself to believe that either it was my destiny to have a close call with death or I had cheated death entirely.
