"Jason, you don't understand. I can't stay here." She whispered, one huge duffel bag slung over her shoulder. He stared at her in disbelief. How could she leave him like that? Without any type of explanation whatsoever. They'd been married for almost 20 years. She couldn't just walk out on him. Or her kids. Their kids.
"You're right, I don't understand Katherine. What about Bailey and Luke?" He asked, his voice breaking. He'd always been the more emotional one in their relationship.
"I'm doing this for them." She responded, keeping her voice low. She didn't want to wake Bailey and Luke. It was 11:30 p.m. on a cold October night. Jason didn't say anything. H just stood there watching her step out of the house and into the dark night.
He closed the door and trudged upstairs to the bedroom they once shared. Now it was just his. As he passed the hallway bathroom he didn't notice Bailey standing in the dark with the door slightly cracked, just enough for her to hear the conversation that just took place.
She waited for her father to close the bedroom door before slowly tip toeing back to her own bedroom. She'd heard everything. Her mother swiftly walking downstairs, opening the door, and her father pacing after her. Bailey had always been a light sleeper, and her mother's footsteps woke her up.
She couldn't believe what happened actually happened. Her parents always had seemed happy. Her family always did the things you would expect a family to do.
Bailey creeped into her room and climbed into bed. As she laid down, tears rolled down her face splashing onto her pillow. All at once she drifted off to sleep, replaying her parents conversation in her mind. Hearing her mother's voice for the last time.
