Chapter 9-Baseball Game
"Hey Aly, were you okay? You didn't come to school yesterday." Eric ran up to me while I walked towards building 3, his eyes immediately shot to the gauze on my head. I pushed my hair behind my ear.
"Yeah...yeah I just...my blood count was real low so I stayed home." I explained. His face grew sympathetic and he placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Well you should take it easy today, alright?"
I grinned. "Yeah, definitely."
Through the day I wouldn't tell my friends what really happened. I'm afraid if I tell them the whole story then they'd freak out. Mike was erratic as it is. Since freshman year everyone had known that I had anemia. They were even wary when I said I wanted to do baseball. But I was born with it so I couldn't change anything.
"I knew this would get out of hand. You've been practicing all last week." Coach Clapp ran his hand over his face. He seemed to regret it even though he allowed me to be on first base.
Coach Clapp seemed annoyed as it is. What more to worry him with this.
"It's fine. I'll be ready for the game." I assured.
Coach Clapp sighed and threw his hand. "You're the only girl on the team. Not to mention the ace player."
"Right." I cut in. "And I'll maintain my health. This is only a one time thing, it'll never happen again."
The door opened and Cullen showed up between the the doors, an innocently curious look on his face. Definitely feigning it. "Um, sorry Coach Clapp, I heard Alyson was in here and I need to talk to her."
Coach Clapp's eyes widened and I felt my jaw fall slack. Surprisingly so I was kind of happy that Cullen's appearance stopped Coach's oncoming scolding.
Even so, I snapped my head to Coach and immediately back to Cullen. Desperate to get out the gym I walked to the door and dragged Cullen away.
"What do you want to talk about?" I asked once we stopped at the entrance of building 3.
"Talk...right." He nodded and I saw he was trying to make something up.
"You were lying?" Somewhere in my mind I knew I shouldn't be surprised but yet I still was.
"So you're feeling better, yeah?" He asked briskly. I tilted my head.
"Yeah. Thanks." So, if we're not going to talk walking away would be safe now. Cullen followed me.
"Let me drive you home, then." Right. Dad drove me to school. Great.
Well, taking the bus or riding with Edward Cullen. Figures it won't be as bad.
"Lead the way then." I ordered.
When we got in the shiny Volvo and strapped myself in I was reminded of the last time I was in here and that incident led to all this. Why I keep getting in danger I have no idea. And can't figure why every time I'm led to Cullen.
"I should tell my dad he doesn't need to get me." I started dailing and put the phone to my ear. I got his voicemail and left a message.
I looked over at Cullen to see he was looking at me throughout the call.
"What?"
"You got a new phone." His eyebrows furrowed and maybe Cullen didn't give me the phone. He did look genuinely confused.
"Yeah. I found it in my room after my kidnapping. Thanks."
He started the car and the engine purred through the air. "You're starting to sound redundant."
