“Hey, little guy. Your mum's asleep right now. But, she won't call herself your mum. She says it funny. But, that's okay. Because, she's still perfect. Just like you. Did you know that? You are so perfect. Just a little bundle of perfection. I can't believe something as perfect as your mum came into my life, and now I have two of you. Two whole people who are perfect.
“Well, you're tiny. But, you've got all your little fingers and all your little toes. You've got two eyes, and two ears, and your mummy's nose. I love her little nose. I like to kiss it when she does something cute. I'll do the same with you, too. Did you know that? Although, you did get my chin. Sorry about that, little guy.”
Silence.
“I'm sorry, little guy. I won't be around as much as I'd like to be. But, I've gotta support you and your mum. She's really good, though, you know? She doesn't ask for a whole lot. I like to surprise her with nice things, sometimes. I love that look in her eyes. But, she gets that look sometimes when she's just looking at me.” Sigh. “She got that look a lot when she would look at herself when you were inside there. She's going to love you enough for both of us, though. She'll be the best mum in the world. She's been waiting for you for a long time.”
Long pause.
“I'm in a band. We are pretty good. I play the drums. I never really had someone in my life before your mum. Everyone thought I was gay for a long time. How silly is that. Aside from my mum and sister, I had them. But, they couldn't really stop the rumors, could they.” Silence. “Your grandad died when I was still just a kid. So, you won't get to meet him. But, the rest of us will love you so much.
“Your grandmum has already made you lots of tiny clothes. Although, you're a bit smaller than we would have hoped for. But, that's just because you are a little early. You gave us a scare for a little bit. You're going to be a naughty little boy, aren't you? Well, you better treat your mum right. She's a good person, and it would break her heart if you hurt her. And, I don't want you to break her heart.
“Oh!! Look! There's your Uncle Josh at the window. He's one of my best mates in the whole world. Him and Uncle Matt, and Uncle Max, and Uncle Chris. They all already love you, too. It's kind of funny. They've all been with their girls for a long time, but I was the first one to have a baby. And god am I glad I don't have to wait! They'll all be freaking out about how to change a diaper, and I will already be an expert. You came along at the perfect moment. Maybe you weren't too early. You knew you were supposed to be here, now. Didn't you?”
Silence. “Well, your mum is still asleep, and the doctor said she would be asleep for awhile. She had a bit of a difficult time, but she will be all good after she gets some rest. So, how about we go meet your aunts and uncles? How would you like that, little guy?” A smile spread across his face. “Yeah. Hey everyone. I...I'm a dad.”
