Adrian studied the weird girl and he could sense her nervousness turn into suspicion as she studied his friends with narrowed eyes.
He almost laughed in surprise when she actually snapped out her suspicions, but schooled his features instead. She was right. They did want something from her, but they had to use the illusion of "making friends" to get her to trust them. That was not going to be an easy thing to do because she clearly had trust issues.
He couldn't help the smug grin that etched onto his face as he glanced at his friends. Terran, Ember, and Oceania gaped at her, eyes wide in shock. Frost had stopped mid chew, staring in surprise.
"Cerry!" her friend, Arya, chided. She sent an apologetic look their way and turned to her friend trying to placate her, but Cerry didn't back down.
"Did Nina and her goons send you?" she demanded, ignoring Arya.
"Who?" Oceania asked, confused.
"Those three estupidas over there," Cerry pointed to a table a few feet away, where a bunch of students were crowded around a group of three girls. Adrian almost scrunched his nose when he noticed what they were eating. How could they survive on only vegetables and fruits? No wonder they were so skinny.
"We don't know those girls," Terran shook his head.
"I have never laid eyes on them," Ember said.
But he had seen what happened earlier when the three girls had bullied Arya and Cerry had stood up for her. As Adrian had walked to his locker after his first class, he had spotted Cerry walking in the same direction as he was going in. Not wanting to scare the girl again, he had waited for her to enter but she quickly turned back as if remembering she had forgotten something.
Adrian had watched as her eyes turned hard when she spotted Arya being cornered by the three girls. Ember whose locker was next to his had been watching her too. She almost went to help Cerry who was slightly shorter than the other three girls, but Adrian had stopped her. He wanted to see if Cerry would carry out the promise of violence in her eyes.
She had handled the situation well and from the way the three girls, which he now learned were the clique, had let Cerry drag her friend away, he could tell that she was not someone to be messed with.
"What are your intentions for sitting with us then?" she asked them now, eyes still narrowed.
"Alright you got us," Terran sighed defeatedly, raising his hands.
Cerry crossed her arms and gave Arya a look that said See.
Then Terran reached into his bag. Pulling out a flyer, he placed it in front of her. She reluctantly tore her gaze from him, as if staring at him till kingdom come would confirm her suspicions that they were up to no good.
She lightly picked up the flyer, which had a running figure and read Run for the kids! She looked up and looked confusedly at all of them.
"We're a track team. We need an extra runner and we were wondering if you would like to join," Ember explained.
Cerry narrowed her eyes again at Terran, "How come this is the first time am hearing about this meet?"
Adrian almost rolled his eyes. He knew this plan wasn't a solid one. Especially when dealing with a cynic like Cerry. Since they couldn't come up with a plan that didn't involve kidnapping or brutality quickly enough, they had had to settle for this stupid idea.
"We planned it recently," Oceania swooped in, saving Terran from the terror that was Cerry's eyes. No wonder she didn't need to swing fists at the clique in the hallway. Who needed physical violence when you could terrorize with one icy look?
