My eyes slowly fluttered open to find a colorful painted ceiling. All I could do was focus on the lines and find shapes within the details but then reality struck.
I lurched forward and flung my legs down to the cold tiled floor. Upon second glance the room reminded me of a science lab at school. It had countertops with built in sinks and an over abundance of storage space. But the room was decorated and made into something fun and vibrant with the wooden cabinets painted in rainbows and vivid patterns. I was in someone else's bed— a water bed I now notice, with a neon pink, yellow, and black bed setting. The room was enough to start a headache. Am I at school?
I hopped my way to the door and gasped to find it locked. "What?" I tried it again, smacking my palm against it, cringing at the noise, banging on the door to get someone's attention. The dim hallway outside stayed silent. I backed away from the door and raked my hands through my knotted hair. What do I do? Did those two boys seriously knock me out and drag me here? My heart is racing and I'm breathing as if I'm struggling through a mile in gym class.
Another door to my left suddenly opens and in walks a petite girl with neon pink hair and an all black outfit that made her darker skin tone pop. Her fingers caught the light as they were decorated with giant ornate silver rings. She wore a small black top that showed off some concerning scarring that gave me chills— but also impressed me. She commanded the space and I couldn't look away from her.
She gasped and dropped the box she was holding and dashed to me with weirdly impressive speed. She grabbed my hands and squealed, "You're finally awake!" I noticed the girl spoke with an accent, her voice higher in pitch but somehow dark.
I gulped, noticing her stormy yet artificial silver eye color.
"You have no idea how long I have been waiting to meet you, Ayla." I felt my heart stop. She talked as if she knew me... She looked forward to meeting me? I've never heard anyone say that before. Even with her piquing my interest, still I hesitated.
"You... know my name?" It was the same story as the boys in my room, I didn't fear her. The sight of their silver eyes didn't break me down, somehow I already knew I wasn't in danger. Safe.
The girl was about as intense as her room. She gagged, "El dio es mio mija— I literally didn't introduce myself I'm sorry!" She dropped my hands and straightened up, "My name is Mavis. I'm a Foreseer so I know all about you, and I am going to be one of your roommates during your stay here!" She reminded me of scenes where a summer camp counselor trying to cheer up a group of homesick kids.
My lips parted but I quickly took a deep breath. This was weird. I don't know how to feel. Those boys said I could trust them and I'm inclined to listen, and Mavis seems genuinely excited to have me here. But I was eyeing that door she opened like it was my lifeline— it still might be. Even if my body wasn't in fight mode, what if they did something to me to make me trust them? Why was she excited to know me? And what does she mean Foreseer? Was that even a question to waste my time with right now.
I glanced towards the door and then back to Mavis. Her face was beaming but she caught my glance and laughed to herself. "If you want to dramatically run out the door, be my guest." She leaned in closer, "I'll give you a head start."
A whimper escaped my lips and I darted to the other side of the room, throwing myself out the door and into the other room. Just like the classrooms back at my school, some were connected or shared space with a storage closet or prep room. I opened the second door and found myself in a dimly lit maze of hallway. Again... just like a school?
