Choice One

He decides to trust his friend and heads back to the cabin.  Steve gets to Natasha's cabin, and they sit down. "Okay, tomorrow the forest will test you, there's no way to know exactly what it will do but I know you can do this" Nat reassures.  "What if I fail? Then all my friends will die, me included" Steve says worried.  "That won't happen" Nat says confidently. "How are you so sure?" Steve asks. She smiles "because I know you won't let that happen" He nods thinking about all the ways things could go wrong tomorrow.  Natashas notices his worry and places her hand on his.  He looks up and into her emerald eyes.  She smiles "it will be okay Steve, trust me".  He smiles too, but then it fades, "but it won't be okay for you" he says.  Nat looks down then back up at him "Steve, it's okay, really." Steve shakes his head "no it's not, you deserve to be free."  She smiles, he's so caring she thinks.  "I'll be okay, when you pass, maybe you could come back and visit me" Nat says.  He smiles.

The next morning Steve gets up extra early and heads to Natasha's cabin. When he gets there, she is already outside. "Ready?" She asks him. "As ready as I can be" he answers. That night as the moon starts to rise the test begins.  Steve climbs trees, runs from weird creatures and climbs a rocky cliff.  Finally, he ends up at the top of the waterfall.  The wind starts to blow and turns into a wind tunnel, then it lets go pushing wind through the whole forest.  Then it all goes calm. "Did it work?" Steve asks worried. Natasha stands beside him as a path of flowers is made.  Nat smiles "you did it, the forest is leading you out".  Steve smiles then turns to her and hugs her.  She hugs him back.  Then they pull away "thank you Nat" Steve says. "You're welcome, tomorrow you guys can leave" Nat says.  He nods "I guess this is it" "Ya" Nat says sadly.  "I'II come back to visit, I promise" Steve says. Nat smiles sadly "Okay".  They walk down the cliff and when they get to the bottom both stop.  "See you in a minute Nat" Steve says. "See you in a minute Steve" Nat repeats. Before Steve leaves he leans down and places his lips on hers.  Nat kisses back.  Slowly they pull away.  Steve turns around and goes back to his cabin.

The next day the group of friends follow the path of flowers to the edge of the forest.  Steve takes one last glance at the forest and walks across the border.  Once he's on the other side all the memories of him preparing for the test disappear.  Including the ones of Natasha.  The group went back to New York and never thought of the Black Forest again.  Natasha sits at the waterfall still feeling Steve's lips on hers.  She sighs knowing that he'll never come back like he promised.  She knew the forest would erase his memory of all the time they spent together.  She looks at the waterfall and says in a quiet whisper "See you in a minute Steve."

That's one way it could go. What do you think will happen if Sam chose differently?
