Death

As the hours passed, you sat alone in the great hall of the church. You weren't religious at all, but as if the skies had caved in, weighing you down by your shoulders and gently laying your head to rest, chin against your chest, you were at a loss. You couldn't think of a single thought, other than

    Why?

Why you? Your life was so happy and you were so content until Wall Maria got destroyed. You lived with your mother and three siblings. You loved them so much. If you could've held their hands for the last time, you would, hell, you wished that you had died along with them when the boulder hit your home. You knew that others had to witness family members get eaten, but not even being able to see your family's face for the last time hurt deeper than a knife through a heart.

You couldn't imagine the fear and horror, along with the panic and confusion that they had to go through. You sometimes wondered if they got crushed right away, or got trapped and slowly-

You tightly closed your eyes to stop yourself from thinking.

Your head was hung low as the church organ bumbled lowly in its songs as a lone body, you, was seated on a bench in the middle, near the back of the church. The consistent low buzzing of the organs buzzed through your soul and caused your heart to stir. You slowly lifted your head up in realization. Your eyes slowly lit up, and you smiled in the slightest, but the light in your eyes wasn't of content or happiness, but in a manner where it would've disturbed a passer-by.

    You weren't alone, you realized.

You still had your older brother, James, who survived, and your sister.

You hadn't noticed, but when you turned to your left, you saw a man in a church priest's suit standing beside you. He looked down with a small smile on his face to which he kept the same smile even though you never returned one back. You were still in a small daze of daydreaming and hadn't come back to the consciousness of socializing yet.

Both of the man's hands were behind his back, and his hair was the color of the same bench that you were sitting on, a dark bark color, except less glossy. His hair was a little shaggy but you didn't question his state. The church had gladly taken in survivors from Maria residents, feeding, clothing and helping everyone with their injuries. You didn't want to offend them.

Besides the shaggy hair, the priest had dark circles under his eyes from taking care of the other survivors. He had gotten skinnier since you came here about a week and a half ago. You realized that he probably stopped eating in order to be able to feed everyone. In your eyes, he was a kind and caring man. He did so much for your fellow villagers.

"Father Keigan," you say in a small voice.

"[name], what are you doing here?" he asks.

You look back down and shake your head.

"I'm just thinking about my home. And my mom and my siblings."

Father Keigan sighs and lifts his head up to look at the ceiling of the church that was plastered in mosaic colored glass. He takes in another breath as he closes his eyes before slowly looking back down at you. You were tired, and your face carried a blank expression. You looked back at Father Keigan as he spoke.
