Unfortunately for me, my mom insisted on driving me to school. I was still thinking about what she told me. Freya didn't know Mr. Glaser was her father. Even worse, Aunt Alina had betrayed my mom by sleeping with her boyfriend.
"I guess I'll see you at home." I waved to my mom.
She nodded and headed off in the direction of Mr. Glaser's classroom. I really wanted to know what they were going to talk about.
I got to my locker and called out Kane's name. A few minutes passed before he popped in next to me. I looked around just to make sure no one was paying attention to me. There weren't that many students in the hall yet. They were just starting to arrive.
"You summoned me?" He asked.
"My mom is talking to Mr. Glaser," I said under my breath, "can you find out what they're talking about?"
"You want me to spy on them?"
"Please."
Kane nodded and was gone in an instant. I sighed and shoved my books into my bag. When I closed my locker I turned to see Cole making his way to me. Cole leaned against my locker when he reached me.
"Hey."
"Hi." I said, feeling a bit shy.
Okay, Cole was definitely attractive and of course I remembered Stella and Kane teasing me about him having a crush on me. Cole was actually a nice person and had helped me when I needed it without giving it a second thought.
"You're here early." I commented after he just stood there smiling at me without saying anything.
"I wanted to see how you were doing after yesterday." He said. "I wanted to stop by your house to check on you but didn't know if you would be up for it."
"I wouldn't have minded." I admitted. "But we're still on for tomorrow, right?"
Cole grinned. "I wouldn't miss it for the world."
"Blaire, you're here." Stella said when she reached us. "I thought after yesterday you would have stayed home."
"Why would I do that?"
"Because you passed out in class?"
"Believe me, my mom was all for the idea that I stay home but no way was I going to do that. She was smothering me all of yesterday afternoon. She even told me I could stay home and skip school today."
"Why didn't you take her up on that offer?" Stella asked.
"I didn't want to be stuck at home with my mom. Especially now that Freya knows that I know about magic."
"Seriously?" Stella asked.
"When did that happen?" Cole looked around as if trying to find Freya.
"It happened yesterday. I just got tired of her trying to bully me. I wanted her to know that I could play that game too."
"Do you think she knows..." Stella trailed off.
Our eyes met and I knew what she was thinking. Cole on the other hand looked at the stone dangling from my neck. He still didn't know about Kane and I couldn't tell him about it. At least not now, but I wanted to. I didn't want to lie to him.
"She doesn't know about the stone or anything else besides the fact that I know about magic."
"Do you think she'll tell your mom?" Cole asked.
"No. To Freya that would be admitting she's scared of me and she would roll over in her grave before she does that." I sighed.
"Can we not talk about Freya? We'll only end up summoning her and it's too early to deal with bitchy." Stella said.
"Are you coming with us tomorrow?" Cole asked, changing the subject.
"Tomorrow?" She looked at us in confusion.
"I forgot to tell you yesterday that Cole and I are meeting up and we're going to see if we can find anything useful in the grimoire. You should come and bring yours too."
"Yeah that'll be great." She said. "Speaking of grimoires. Have you gotten a hand on yours?"
I sighed. "Not a chance...but..."
Freya was walking down the hall to her group of friends. This was the perfect opportunity for me to get my hands on it. That's if she wasn't carrying it with her at all times.
"But?" Stella said.
"Freya is here at school which means I can search her room without worrying about getting caught. I would just have to get rid of my mom."
"How are you going to do that?" Cole asked.
"I'll think of something." I said.
The bell rang and everyone started heading to their classes. I had to hurry and catch my mom before she left. There was no way I could let this opportunity pass.
"I'll see you both tomorrow." I told them.
I turned to leave but Cole caught my arm. Stella raised a brow but just waved at us and walked away. I looked at Cole questioningly.
"You're not planning on still going over to Camille's, are you?" He asked.
"I have to know. I told you yesterday that if anything happens I'll let you know. Don't worry."
"If it's Camille then I have to worry."
I smiled at him and for whatever reason, I leaned in to kiss his cheek. When I pulled away Cole's eyes were wide in surprise.
"I know you're just looking out for me and I appreciate that. Seriously. You've done a lot for me and you have no idea what that means to me." I said. "I'll be okay. Trust me."
Cole reached down to hold my hand. "Just be careful."
"I will." I said, giving his hand a squeeze before walking away.
I wanted to hit myself over the head with a brick. My heart was fluttering. I liked Cole. I liked how easy it was to trust and count in him.But there was also Kane who almost kissed me yesterday. There was one problem where Kane was concerned. He wasn't exactly alive yet. What would happen once he was alive again? What did that mean for us?
I shoved that thought away. One thing at a time. I had to find the grimoire. Even if I had to tear down Freya's room I would find it.
I checked Mr. Glaser's room first to see if my mom was still talking to him. I sighed in relief when I saw that she was still there. They were in deep conversation. Students were starting to pile one but they didn't seem to notice. Kane was right there next to them absorbing everything.
I knocked on the door to get their attention. My mom said something to him before she started making her way to me. Before she reached me, Kane had already appeared next to me.
"Aren't you supposed to be in class?" She asked.
"Actually, I was thinking maybe staying home wouldn't be such a bad thing." I said. "I thought that I would be okay coming back today but some kids from English class were giving me weird looks. They probably think there's something wrong with me now."
"There's nothing wrong with you, Blaire." She said, reassuringly.
"I don't think I can face them all today." I said. "I guess I could use a day with just the two of us. Just like old times."
"Okay, let's stop by the office and let them know you'll be absent for the rest of the day."
"Everything alright?" Mr. Glaser said, coming to stand next to us.
"Everything's fine." Mom smiled that fake smile I knew so well. "We were just leaving."
My mom practically dragged me away from that classroom. Kane kept up with us and I caught him shooting Mr. Glaser a look. Whatever it was that my mom talked to him about I was sure I wasn't going to like.
What the hell was my life coming to?
