Baekhyun drew his bow, the arrow swinging between his fingers, aiming at the dark forest in front of him.

The smell of moss and wet mud filled the air, soaking his leather boots and burying himself in the mud, making him permanently shiver with cold.

Night had fallen a few hours ago, and the cold was seeping into his bones through his clothes, which were already worn and quite threadbare.

The mist came out of his mouth, painting the black air white for a few seconds, which froze his already purple fingers.

The forest seemed to sing with the soft murmur of the wind through the wet leaves of the trees, trees so tall and dense that they could not see more than two metres. A forest that no one was allowed to enter, at least not at night.

He could hear the small animals howling and howling among the heavy, colourful tundra, even with the incessant whistling of the wind in his ears.

A quiet night like any other.

"Baek" behind him a jovial voice distracted him, he relaxed the taut bow between his fingers and looked at him: his friend JongDae "You can go home, go have a hot drink, you must be freezing your ass off".

"Thank god, I thought I'd starve to death" he crossed the bow on his back and put away his arrows, watching as his friend took his abandoned position and did the same as him.

"Eat something hot for me, do me a favour and come find me in the morning to see if I'm not dead" he laughed.

"That I will. Bye!" he waved and walked quickly away from the place, straight to his house.

The town was lit up, the street lamps dimly illuminating the entrances of the houses, but allowing passage and chasing away the darkness that the forest brought. He could see the sky painted black by the incessant chimneys burning wood, with the futile attempt to keep the cold from passing through the walls of the small houses that decorated the village, some more upright than others, some less habitable than others.

He almost ran home, even though he didn't want to meet his father, but the cold and the empty stomach seemed to win out over the fear he felt every time he stepped through the damp wooden door of his little house.

He was two houses away from arriving when his body was struck by a much larger one, so roughly that he was thrown unceremoniously to the ground.

"Shit!" he heard that deep voice above his list of expletives and could feel the fury coursing through his icy body.

"Idiot!"

"I'm sorry! Let me help you" he lifted him off the ground by grabbing his arm almost effortlessly.

Baekhyun rolled his eyes as he saw the face and grimace of embarrassment on the amber-eyed, fire-red-haired boy's face. The boy was so tall that it even bothered him and he was built in such a particular way that he could lift his body as if it were a feather.

Damn you.

"You want to watch where you're going next time? Let go of me" he removed his hand abruptly when he saw that this one didn't seem to want to let go, and avoided his gaze, something in those strange colored eyes made him hopelessly nervous.

"Forgive me Baek, it was─"

"Don't call me Baek" he cut him off "Watch where you're going, you almost killed me" he turned around with difficulty, as his boots seemed unwilling to stop burying themselves in the mud and walked away, but that wasn't enough for the annoying boy.

"Is your shift over?" he walked beside him as if he'd been invited, as if outside it wasn't I don't know how many fucking degrees below zero and he was standing there, wearing a white T-shirt with a few buttons open and a simple pair of rather dirty trousers.
