Beckett's pov

I squinted against the lights. There was Mother's icon floating above me, but something immediately felt off. Mother was glitching and the other pods were opening and closing fast. All except my friends pods, since Mother already explained they needed to be manually opened.

"Mother, tell me what's happening. You're glitching."

"The ship has gone haywire! You must wake your friends and get to your rooms! We are taking you to earth today so you missed your two adaptation days." Mother stated. She sounded scared, if that was even possible for an A.I. I then realized that it wasnt Mother's voice at all, it was the captains.

"Go Beckett! Now! Wake them and hide in your quarters!" I nodded and rushed to Lyrenna and Fritz's pod. I knew Lyrenna would have a plan. I opened their pod and Lyrenna opened her eyes immediately.

"Beckett! What's happening?" She asked, an alarm sounding as soon as she spoke.

"The ship has gone haywire and Mother is glitching. The captain told me to wake you guys up and hide in our quarters. Lyrenna, wake up Avery and Jess, I'll get Felix and Kelsey."

"Fritz, when Felix wakes up snatch him up and run to your room, explain once you are inside." Lyrenna pointed and his brother's pod.

"Got it," he started off to his brother's pod then turned around, "What's the code?"

"Oh right, um, 97632. Remember that!"

Fritz nods and grabs his brother, running down the corridor to his room. "Beckett! Get your sister and Kelsey and take them to their room and stay there until either Avery or myself comes and gets you!"

I nodded, and gestured for them to follow me. I took a second glance before running off. Avery wasn't waking up. But I needed to push that to the back of my mind right now.

"Beck! What is happening?" Jessica said, trying to speak over the alarm.

"I'll explain when we get there! Right now we need to focus and getting to safety." I took them through the secret passage to the hall where their room was. I entered the code and gestured for them to get inside. Once the door closed I sighed in relief, before remembering Avery's still body.

"Oh no..."

"Okay, explanation. Now!" Jessica half yelled. Kelsey was sitting on the bed with a similar expression to my sister's.

"I woke up and Mother's icon was looking at me. But she was glitching. I'm sure you noticed all the other singular pods going crazy. Mother started talking and it was the captain's voice. She said the ship has gone haywire and Mother is on the fritz. She also said we missed our adaptation days and are being taken to earth today. Lyrenna or Avery are supposed to come get me from here but..." I stopped talking.

"But what?" Kelsey asked raising an eyebrow and standing up off the bed.

I inhaled sharply, "Before we ran off I saw Avery still hadn't woken up and I could tell that he wasn't breathing." Just then realization hit me, "Oh my God. Something was wrong with his pod, which means..." Just then Jess passed out, but Kelsey caught her.

"Beckett, what was wrong with their pod?!" Kelsey dragged my sister over to one of the beds and hoisted (as best she could) her onto it. I ran over and helped her. "Beckett!! She isn't breathing! What was wrong with their pod?" Kelsey was freaking out and was on the verge of a panic attack.

"I will tell you but you need to calm down," Kelsey took a deep breath and visibally calmed herself, "Good. Okay, I'm guessing based on the way they came out of the pod, that their wasn't enough oxygen and to much nitrogen. The nitrogen was most likely liquid and they breathed in to much. Oh no, that means that there is a very large chance that they will die." I ran to my sister's body. She was breathing again which meant she hadn't breathed as much as Avery but that made no sense.

"Kelsey, was there a wall of some sort between you and Felix?" I asked, hoping there was.

"Uh I think so, it was glass. I'm not super sure but before I blacked out I saw it come up out of the bottom of the pod. But what does that have to do with this situation?"

"I think that when the ship started going haywire, too much nitrogen was released into Avery's side of the pod. From what I know about breathing pure nitrogen which is what is used in cryosleep, one or two breaths can cause unconciousness. When the wall came down, Jess must have gotten a whiff of it. Her adrenaline from running here would have kept it at bay but when it subsided she got the full effects. Avery must have breathed to much or the shock of it caused him to stop breathing like Jess and he's fine. They should wake up."

Kelsey looks back at Jessica, "Key word: Should."

Lyrenna's pov (10 minutes earlier)

"Oh my god, Avery wake up!" I was panicking, Beckett just left with the girls and I finally broke down. My best friend isn't breathing and I'm going to die on a planet my ancestors haven't set foot on in so long.

The captain came running in, "Lyrenna why havent you gotten to your quarters?" She then looked down at Avery's head that was sitting in my lap. "So that's why the alarm went off." She bent down and helped me to get up. Avery's still body was still laying on the ground. Even though he was pale, he looked so peaceful, like he's waiting to wake up and see his best friend. But he won't. He's gone, and there's nothing I can do to bring him back.

I break down in tears as the captain calls to crewmates to dispose of his body. "Lyrenna, I know you are upset but the ship is still going crazy and Mother has dissappeared. Go to your quarters. Now. Please."

I nod but then I remember something, "I have to go get Beckett. He's with his sister and Kelsey. I promised I'd go get him."

"Okay go, but be quick" I nod again and race to the girls room.

Beckett's pov (present)

About two minutes went by and the alarm was shut off. The door opens and Lyrenna walks in, she looked so broken. Her face was tear stained and he eyes were puffy and red.

"Come on Beckett, we need to go-" Her voice breaks as she swallows hard, as if something is keeping her from breathing.

"Lyrenna? What's wrong?" Kelsey walks up to her and places an arm around her.

"He's gone." She says, barely above a whisper. Kelsey backs up with a shocked expression while Lyrenna tries to hold back her tears by biting her lip.

"Beckett, what about Jess?" Kelsey looks at me, her eyes glassy from tears. That's when Lyrenna finally looks at Jessica.

"Oh my gosh, not her too." She sinks onto her knees. I run up to her and wrap her arm over my shoulder helping her stand.

"Lyre, she's okay. She's just unconcious." Lyrenna sighs in relief.

"You guys should go, I can take care of her." Kelsey grabs Lyrenna's hands and gives them a squeeze. Lyrenna nods and turns around, walking off. I give a sad smile to Kelsey, knowing she will have to break the news to Jess when she wakes up. I trail after the broken girl, hoping that we will make it back to our room so i can tell her how Av- he died.
