Chapter 7

I lived in Suribachi and my life there was never easy, as for many others as well. I was an orphan due to a huge explosion in the city. What caused it was unbeknown to me at the time.

I was starving to death and walked aimlessly around the destroyed part of the city. "Ito-chan!" A high pitched voice was heard from behind me. My small form turned to see my best friend Aoi caring a bread in her small hands.

I met her at school and since our first meeting, we would always go out and play together or even ask our parents to meet up. She would always be late on our meetings but that never disappointed me. She was always a bit careless so I would always make sure to look out for her. She was like a little sister to me.

"Aoi-chan? What are you doing here alone? What if someone hurt you?" I asked worriedly my friend. As much as I wanted to hang out with her, that's was just impossible. "I wanted to see if you are okay and came to give you this!" She said showing me the bread. "My parents don't know about this so let's keep it a secret!" She said putting her intex finger to her lips.

In the state of hunger I was, I took the bread immediately from her hands and started eating it. She just smiled at me as we sat down to the harsh cold ground.

"Ito-chan...there is another one reason I came to see you today." My eyebrows raised in sightly worry and curiosity. "What is it Aoi-chan?" Her eyes fell as they started to water. Her small hiccups and sniffles were bringing me panic.

"I am moving from Yokohama Ito-chan..." My eyes widened as small tears started to appear on my own eyes as well. "W-what? You are...leaving...?" She nodded her head and hugged tighter her legs, bringing them closer to her face. "My parents found a new job in Ikebukoro so we'll move there." I looked at the ground. "So we won't see each other ever again?" I asked her with pleading eyes. "I don't know Ito-chan..." She shook her head.

I started crying to the idea of being absolutely alone. I wasn't minding the idea of dying from starvation but of the idea of loosing a friend made me realize at the age of 8 how much humans need company.

"Are you going to be okay?" She asked rubbing her eyes to clear away the tears. "I don't know... Aoi-chan...I am scared."

Suddenly my right hand was pulled and I saw Aoi holding my pinky finger to her own. "Let's make a promise Ito-chan." She said determined. My eyes widened and I titled my head to the side in a curious manner. "Let's stay best friends and find each other in the future." A big smile formed on my lips. "Let's do that!" Somehow she would always wash away my worries and I was thankful for that.

For two years, my life in Suribachi was a living nightmare. The starvation, the lack of any luxury and the loneliness was burying my heart into a void of nothingness. I was tired not only physically but emotionally as well. The circumstances made me do things I would normally be too afraid to even think about. I would not only steal but also kill whoever was necessary to survive in this cruel world. The strange power I possessed was just perfect for this situation, using my strings in an evil way only for a small piece of bread. That hard was the life there. To be too afraid to trust anyone and too afraid to be alone.

At the age of 15 my eyes couldn't look worse than empty. They were like glasses mirroring their surroundings. The life had it's ways sometimes so in a way to the other, those eyes were staring into the violet ones of the Port Mafia's boss, Mori Ōgai.

"Ito-chan. You have proven that you are indeed a powerful person. Your ability is great in stealth but it doesn't go back in the attack. You will be from now on an expert executive in Port Mafia and you will be Dazai's partner."

My empty eyes saw a boy close to my age. He had wavy dark brown hair and brown eyes, empty like mine. But what was standing out in him was the several bandages around himself.
