A week has went by and I still haven't been able to bring myself to asking her about that text. All the while, she's been hanging out with her so called friend and acting like nothing is wrong. I don't know why I make myself go through this pain, when I should just stand up and confront her about it. In the meantime, I've just been keeping my head busy with work and watching TV. I was surprised when I turned on the nightly news a few days ago and saw that in the small town just a few blocks away from where I work, there was a murder.
They said that the body had been there for a few days at least and it was a horrific scene. The victim was late forties and appeared to live alone, from what the news could gather. It was scary to think that happened just a few blocks away from my work, lately I've been more cautious when driving through that town or walking from the bus stop to work. As the sun started to go down, I still haven't heard a word from Emily ever since she went to her other lover's place this morning.
'Other lover' I thought. 'How did it come to this? What did I do to deserve this?" I wondered. As I started to get into pajamas, I heard the door open and Emily came into the room. "Oh I thought you wouldn't be home till later" she said startled. "I got off work early because I helped the boss close up shop while he was away and said I could leave." She nodded and got into her pajamas and laid in bed. "Hey honey, so who is your friend you've been spending alot of time with?" I froze right when I said that. 'All I was gonna ask was how was your day, I didn't mean to say that' I thought to myself. "She's an old college friend I spent alot of time with" she responded, not showing any sign of lying or stuttering.
'Well since I got this far, might as well push harder' I thought. "Maybe I can meet her one day" I said acting as composed as I could be. "Yeah maybe but she doesn't really like meeting new people and you probably wouldn't like her." 'Oh I bet I wouldn't' I thought. "Well you never know." "I said probably not, leave it be or do you have to be so nosey with what I do?" She snapped. I sighed and turned the other way, I know if I push even more it will just lead to a fight. Even tho it probably should but I'm to tired to even try.
As morning came I woke up to a note on the night stand saying she has went to her friend's house for a couple days. I tried calling and texting her but as always I got no response in the end. 'I'll worry about this later, I'm gonna be late if I don't leave now' I said to myself. I rushed to the bus and got on, as I sat there all I could do is come to the fact that my relationship was over, probably was for awhile now.
I got to work and barely made it on time, I punched in and got right to it. At lunch, I went to go get some snacks at the vending machine but it was out of order. 'Well I guess I'll eat when I get home' I thought. As the day went by, it was finally time to clock out. I headed to the bus and sat all the way in the back, so I could be left alone with my thoughts. 'I guess it's time to start getting ready to confront her and tell her it's over' I thought to myself, while holding back tears.
I got off the bus and headed for my apartment. I always hate walking this part of town, all these bars and strip clubs, it always attracts the wrong attention. As I was passing by one of the strip clubs a door was flung open and someone ran into me, knocking me down. All I could hear was laughter, so I turned around to see who it was but they didn't seem to notice me at first.
"God damnit, your seriously going to get us kicked out for good" the man said to his buddy. "It's not like I go looking for trouble, trouble always finds me and besides that guy owed me money and he didn't pay up" said the guy in the suit. "I swear, sometimes you act like a fucking lunatic" said his other buddy. I got up and brushed myself off, I don't think these guys even see me, so I started to walk again. "Hey" said someone from behind. I turned around and saw it was the guy in the suit, he was smiling and seemed like a genuine guy by the way he was dressed.
He put his hand on my shoulder and grabbed my hand to shake it. "Sorry for bumping into you runt, I didn't see you, truly sorry" he replied with a smile. "Oh its okay, it was my fault walking pass the door to close." I said to him. He chuckled and gave me a pat on the shoulder and started walking the opposite way with his friends, while they were still scolding him for whatever he did.
I finally got home and not to my surprise Emily wasn't here. I tried calling her again and no answer, I wasn't even gonna try bothering her with a text especially since she probably wouldn't reply anyway. So I made some food and sat on the couch and turned on the TV to watch the 10 o'clock news. They just finished talking about a series of gruesome murders that were happening in the towns closest to us and may be the work of a new serial killer. After awhile of watching I turned it off and went into the room to get some rest. While laying there I couldn't help but think what Emily was doing right now and I cried myself to sleep.
