Kelsey's pov (next morning)
Last night was so aggravating. I mean, don't get me wrong, Jessica is great and I would've chosen to stay in a tent with her, but Lyrenna doesn't get to decide it for me. I slept so bad last night. I couldn't shake the feeling that we were being watched, but when I got up to check, I couldn't see anything. I thought I'd be the only one up early in the morning, but then I saw the blue eyed newbie sitting at the edge of camp.
"Hey Octavia." I say sitting beside her.
She turns to me, "Hey, how'd you sleep?"
"Awful, I kept feeling like we were being watched. I felt like that at the fire too. Not now though." I say looking out into the distance.
"Same, I woke up in the middle of the night with someone trying to light fire to the twins' tent. I chased him off. I've been out here keeping watch ever since."
"Oh my gosh, really?" She nods. "Maybe we should start assigning someone each night to keep watch."
"My thoughts exactly. I'm going to talk to Lyren and Beckett when the get up." She says getting up and moving to another side of the camp.
I let out a suprised laugh, "You too? Geez, I thought if anyone was going to think Lyrenna shouldn't be in charge, it'd be you. She always gets to be in charge all because of her name, it's her fault Avery died." I say, scowling at Lyrenna's tent.
"You know just as well as I do, that it was not her fault he died. The ship went crazy, I heard the alarms and the slamming of pods myself. And I don't think she gets to be in charge here because of her name, it's because she is suited for the role better than any of us." Octavia says looking at me with an expressionless face.
"No. She shouldn't be allowed to just take up the role because she's best suited for it. Have you even met her? I mean that little speech last night she said to Fritz, and he just accepted it. I know him and if anyone else had ever said that to him he'd hit them."
"He accepted it because she's hurting. She will get over it soon, and she will be even more suited for her role than ever before. It'll be her, not any of us. Her life not ours. That's how people like her respond to death. She won't risk us, if anything, she will risk herself more times than we can count."
"I think you'd be better for the role, you are an Isinen." I say crossing my arms and going to stand next to her.
"Was an Isinen. And I grew out of that. I'm not some pampered princess waiting to inherit to throne, I'm just a girl trying to find a family."
Just then Lyrenna comes out of her tent with Beckett close behind. "Hey Octavia, why were you out here?" Lyrenna says, obviously tired.
"She was out here because you were stupid enough not to put someone on night watch. Someone tried to set fire to the twins' tent last night. It's a good thing Octavia is here or you'd have killed two more people." I say for Octavia. By this time everyone had come out of their tent and was listening.
Lyrenna's nostrils flared and she brought her head up and straightened her shoulders, "What are you talking about? I never killed anyone."
"Yes you did, it's your fault that Avery died. If you had just gone with Jess into that pod, he'd be alive and you'd be dead. King Janneaus should have killed you when you decided to run from him. He's just causing all of us misery by putting you with us."
"It is not my fault that Avery died, and if anything, you are causing everyone's suffering by picking fights like this." Lyrenna took a step forward and easily stared down her opponent.
"Ugh, whatever. I'm going out there on my own and no one will stop me. I'd rather die than be under your pathetic excuse of leadership." I say, walking to my tent. I grab all of my things and a blanket and walk away from all the stares.
