EPISODE 2

NOTHING LIKE A MOTHER'S LOVING

[The episode begins with Gwen Jackson in her bedroom powdering her face. She has on an elegant two piece black business suit. She is heard narrating as she prepares for her day]

Gwen

[Narrating]

When anyone asks me how I got so successful, I am never ashamed to let them know that it was the grace of God.

[Smiles faintly]

I grew up in Godwin, Virginia and later relocated with my mother here to Warm Springs. It was a major change for me, but I managed. In my early years I landed myself a job as crew member at Dingo’s Diner, not too far from where I live. While working at the diner I attended Warm Springs Baptist church, where I found God and haven’t turned back since. I’m proud to say that I am head of the Prayer Warriors team at the church, I have an established group of saved men and women who distribute meals to the hungry every holiday, I am a known activist in the city, and last but definitely not least: I am the best wedding planner in the South.

[Puts her lipstick on and smiles at herself in the mirror]

I am truly blessed, and I owe it all to God.

[Looks at a picture of her family on her nightstand next to her bible. In the picture: Gwen is seated in the center, a young Mac is standing to her right, a young Chris on her left, and a young DuRag sitting in her lap.]

Did I mention that God has blessed me with the best boys a mother could have? I mean…of course only two are mines…but my sister left Chris on my doorstep and it would have broken my heart to see him go into foster care. I raised him like my own. I love all of them.

[Sighs with a smile]

God has truly blessed me. That is my excuse for why I’m so highly favored…and I’m sticking to it.

[Mac taps on her door and peeks inside her bedroom, she turns and smiles at her son]

Gwen

Good morning, Mac. How are you feeling?

Mac

[Uneasily]

Alright, I guess, Mama. You almost ready to head out?

Gwen

[Sighs]

Yes, sweetheart.

[Looks at him in concern]

Is Crystal alright?

Mac

She’s managing.

Gwen

Today is going to be pretty tough for her. We’re going to have to be her support, you know that.

[Mac nods]

Good…go and see if Chris and your brother are ready please.

Mac
