A Soulful Heart (A RWBY Ruby Rose x Penny Story)

Chapter One : A "Grimm" Encounter

[Ruby POV]

There were no words to describe the scene that lay before us.

I stood on the rooftop of an Atlas apartment complex, overlooking the vast city below me. The dark sky above was blocked by the massive array of lights that came from the bustling city... except it was the wrong kind of bustling. Fires erupted from buildings as chaos took hold of the city, the smoke turning the sky from a brilliant dark blue to a nasty rust red. Sirens blared up and down the streets as citizens scrambled for shelter. Some even took to looting stores in the midst of the mayhem, trying to steal and snatch whatever they found to be worthy of risking their lives... They all knew what those sirens meant, and one glance down the street proved them right. Hoards of Grimm, deadly creatures that had the looks of various demonic creatures, swarmed the streets. Their glowing red auras shimmered as they prowled along the city streets, attacking the unfortunates who didn't make it to safety in time. They preyed on the scared and hateful... which sucked because we were in a city now full of panicking people.
Next to me we're the rest of my team members: Yang Xiao Long, Blake Belladonna, and Weiss Schnee. Assigned by Beacon on our first week as "Team RWBY", we were the star team of the year.
Which meant we were stuck on this stupid mission. Well, actually it can't be stupid.
Cuz we get to save lives and kick butt!!

   "Alright team!" I shouted over the sirens, turning to face my teammates. "We were assigned this mission to save lives and figure out what's causing this outbreak!" Weiss stood there, sarcastically giving me the "no duh" glare, which I immediately shook off. "I figured it would be best if we split up and cover different parts of the city. Like, Blake and I can take the west side to stop them from leaving town, while Weiss and Yang take the east side. That way we can cover more of the city and get home quicker! For like, studying and stuff." I said, wanting to go back to the Beacon dorms and just play with my dog, Zwei, while watching anime.
   Yang gave me an eyebrow raise, hesitating before shrugging. "Welp, we haven't been failed on that tactic before, wouldn't hurt to try it here. Her words got a reaction out of Weiss really fast.
   "You must be joking right? I mean, look how many there are!" She shouted, gesturing wildly with her hand outwards to the chaotic streets of Atlas. "Do you really think we can take on all of them as PAIRS?!"
   Yang chuckled, loading a few fire charges into her arm gauntlets. "Yeah, as long as you can keep up with me, Princess." She winked, causing Weiss to blush and go into hysterics. Blake eyed me, motioning for us to go. I nodded in agreement, leaving the two on the roof to bicker.

Reaching the west side of town was no easy task. Cars and various bits of rubble littered the streets and blocked paths, making traversing the area difficult. At least it was for me, Blake was acting all ninja-like and just leaping over everything and off walls so she was bit farther ahead of me. (Note to self, teach her not to be a show off!) However, I was able to (almost) keep up, slicing down cars and oncoming Grimm rather easily with my scythe hybrid, Crescent Rose.
Finally, we reached a clearing. Central Square.
Which was completely overrun by Grimm. Dozens of them. And it didn't take them long to spot us.
"Ruby! You flank them from the left, I'll take the right!" Blake called out, noticing one of them was about to charge.
"Got i-" I began to shout back
Before everything went out in a flash of brilliant emerald light.

My eyes slowly opened, my head pounding like a huge animal was stomping on it. The ringing in my ears was piercingly loud as my vision struggled to correct itself.
Whatever must've happened knocked me back quite a ways, because I had been slammed up against a car about half a block from where I stood, about to be charged by a hoard of hog-like demon creatures... the Grimm.
They had vanished. As well as the rubble surrounding them. It had to have been some sort of blast or an explosion... I wouldn't be surprised if the Atlas military fired a rocket or something at the Square.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps coming from my left. I couldn't keep my eyes open much longer as they started to slip shut again
"Oh my goodness, are you alright? Miss?"
I slowly opened my eyes, straining to see... it didn't sound like Blake at all...

A girl stood in front of me, kneeling down to my level. Her emerald green eyes looked at me with worry and shock as she looked over my body for injuries... which there had to have been a lot.
The girl was pale, freckles dotting her skin. Her eyes shown almost inhumanly, parts of them covered by luscious ginger hair that came down to her chin, at least from what I could see. She wore a white and black dress with green patterns dotting the lining of the skirt, which had been torn and burned some, likely from the blast.
"Oh, okay uh..." the girl paused, looking around. "Come, I will take you someplace safe." She said with an anxious tone.
I could feel her hands wrapping around my body, hoisting me up from where I was layi- dang she was strong. She was lifting me no problem- oh *ahem* anyways.
I groaned slightly, causing the girl to stop.
"Miss, are you alright? Can you tell me your name?" She said, probably to check if my brain wasn't damaged or anything.
"R-Ruby..." I managed to say, my voice slightly raspy from having the wind knocked out of me.
"Salutations, Ruby! My name is Penny Polendina!" She said in a sing-song voice, smiling as she adjusted the bridal grip she had on my body. "Come now, let's get you someplace safe so I can treat your wounds."

Sorry for the slow start and how rough it is, I'll likely update it as the story continues, but there will be some epic fights and also some wholesome moments mixed in the story in the upcoming parts.
