I could hear the violent sound of rain falling from the sky as it hit the roof of our house. The sound of cars passing through our street always kept me awake but tonight that wasn't the problem. Tonight there was an eerie feeling in our big soundless house. I didn't feel safe tonight.
I tried to concentrate on the sound of my orphan sisters breathing. There were only the two of us in the one bedroom but there were others in the other rooms of our very long and narrow hallway.
I sat up in my bed abruptly, walked over to our window, and opened our black curtains. We used black because it blocked out the bright lights of the city. I guess it's true that the city never sleeps.
There are cars passing and in the distance, I can just make out the shape of a tram. People swarm around the streetlights and I wonder again, why we live here.
I could smell something bitter; it danced along the edge of my very dry tongue. I've smelt it before but I can't quite put my finger on what it is exactly. It is like rusted metal and lemons mixed, a very peculiar smell.
I warily look to June for support and suddenly there's a shadow standing at the edge of her bed. It was as if it just appeared there out of nowhere.
A tall and lean male with a creepy smile upon his perfect face came into view. "Hello dearest Liana, how are you this fine evening?"
Within seconds, he was standing almost face to face with me. I looked up into his bloodshot eyes and felt myself paralyze with fear. "Who...who ar...Are you?"
"There is no need to fear me, dearest. I'm here only to help you. You're an orphan correct?" He wondered slyly exploring my room.
I managed a nod. "How did you know?"
"Well dear," He started with a sigh then before I knew it his fingers were lifting my chin up to his. "You're my daughter."
Suddenly I felt unbearable pain all through my body. My mouth opened and I tilted my head back trying to scream. The man's hand clapped my mouth shut and tears trickled down my already wet with sweat face.
"You're my daughter and I need you to be like me, do you understand Liana?" He whispered harshly. "Now go back to bed and pretend nothing happened. Forget me and go to sleep, forget the pain my dear but when the sun rises think of me and I shall be there."
I nodded and somehow managed to forget and drift off to a sleep that I never thought would have been possible five minutes ago.

"Did you sleep will Anna?" June asked me when my eyes finally fluttered open and I rolled out of bed.
"I don't know. I honestly don't remember." I told her blinking a few times. "What about you?"
"Like a baby." She replied with a tiny shrug of her frail shoulders.
June and I are look absolutely nothing alike but we like to call ourselves twins. We're super close and we tell each other everything. We share clothes even though most look quite baggy on her teeny tiny body. She has sparkly blue eyes and mine are emerald green. Her hair is a very pale blonde and mine is an auburn type colour. We're as different as night and day.
June is in ninth grade and I'm in tenth but we don't believe that's a problem we still spend every moment together sharing our secrets. I remember last year when Tommy Banks asked me to the movies and I had said yes, June was the first to know.
I've lived with this family since I was born and I've never really questioned why I never met my real parents.
Suddenly I felt a shock in the back of my head telling me I was forgetting something.
I heard a crash as the window slammed open and shut and felt a gush of air as if a car had just sped past me. Moments later there was a man standing behind me with a familiar smile resting on his face.
"Hello again Liana, how do you feel on this fine day." Suddenly memories of this man flowed through me like the moment before death when you picture everything good in your life. Pain shot through me climbing from my neck and straight down my back making me groan and cry at the same time.
"Hush child, you have yet a long way to go." The gorgeous man smiled a nasty smile and pulled me out the window running off in a speed of light.
The same smell of rusting metal and lemons flooded my thoughts overwhelming me. I couldn't see my hand in front of me and I was suddenly struggling to breathe.
"You'll be fine little one, patience. You'll get used to it." The man whispered.
I didn't know what to do so I just nodded quickly and lent into the crown of his neck for support. I was holding on for dear life.
Suddenly the world blacked out and I was alone in my nightmares.
The back of throat tickled with need, I could hear my heart pounding in my ears, and my whole body was in agony. So many smells filled the air around me and I could hear people talking and cars racing on the road.
I was suspiciously aware of the veins pumping through my neck and wrist. The blood flowed elegantly through my body circulating underneath my skin. My jaw ached and suddenly last night's events flooded back to me; the creepy man, the pain, June.
"Ah, you're awake dear. How are you feeling this fine evening?" The man wondered.
I was suddenly feeling brave and strong. I stood up. "Who are you to call me 'dear'?"
He chuckled. "Why I'm your father Liana, do you not remember me?"
I did remember him. "Since when do I have a father? I'm an orphan."
"You've always had a father Anna, you just didn't know it." He winked at me and an evil, sly smile spread across his snow white face. His eyes were a sharp emerald green like mine and his hair was a shiny brown.
"What are you?" I growled.
"If I tell you I won't get to have fun watching you trying to figure it out now would I?" He asked in an amused voice which indicates to me that he's clearly having fun.
"No I guess it wouldn't." I replied coldly.
"You remind me of your mother. You're going to turn out just like she did. A sly, conniving, evil little..." He stopped and thought for a moment. "I'm not telling still."
I let out my breath and sighed. "I don't have a mother."
"Oh yes you do, too bad she's gone. She would have really enjoyed your awakening." He laughed a very bitter laugh that seemed to bounce off the walls and torment me.
I had to leave our conversation at that as I blacked out again.
This time when I awoke the man was drinking a red coloured liquid and was smiling at me expectantly. The smell of rusting iron filled my nostrils and unwanted dizziness washed over me. I couldn't think or see. The place at the back of my throat tickled and burned and suddenly I needed to drink.
Within a split second I was in front of the man panting for air even though it appeared I know longer needed it.
I ripped the glass from his hand and swallowed the liquid in one quick gulp. The sweetness of the drink flooded through me and I felt my need soften a little.
My 'father' looked at me wide eyed. "You're doing better than your mother would have expected." He winked and refilled my glass. "Do you understand what's happening yet?"
I shook my head and drained the glass. "I don't care."
I couldn't speak properly. My words seemed to slur. There was something in the way of my tongue.
Fangs. It was my Father's voice whispering into the back of my mind.
"What fangs? I don't have fangs." The man held a mirror to my face and I peered at it curiously. There was a beautiful girl there with shining auburn hair and bloodshot eyes. She was scary and peeking out just underneath her lips were two shark teeth.
"What do you call those my dear?" He asked wiggling his eyebrows.
"I call those fangs." I whispered. Reality sunk in. "What have you done to me?"
"I did not do anything to you. Blame your mother she was the vampire. Not me." He chuckled.
"What are you then?" I urged angrily.
He chuckled. "I'm the devil."
I didn't understand. "What do you mean you're the devil?"
"I'm the devil." He sighed. "And you are very dangerous. You're half devil and half vampire. Welcome to the underworld, my dear."
The underworld wasn't very welcoming. In the past week I've done nothing but drink red stuff and go all scary eyed at anyone who did something to make me angry.
I hadn't thought of June and I hadn't thought of the orphanage; just blood, blood and more blood.
My mother still hadn't made an appearance which I'm not sure I'm happy about. I'd like to have a go at her for doing this to me. So much for the motherly love I hoped for.

"I have a special job for you Liana." Father mentioned to me one night.
He had given me a map and sent me off to hunt my kill. It wasn't too hard. I managed to find it. A small frail looking lady sleeping in her bed was what I found.
I watched her chest rise and fall steadily and listened to her heart thump and blood pump through her veins.
I did not realise what I was doing until I was on top of her. My fangs had slid from my gums and planted themselves straight into the vein in the crown of her neck. She did not awaken just lay there still breathing heavily. It wasn't until her body slumped lifeless to the bed that I realised she was dead. I had sucked the life out of her.
The back of my throat had softened at the sweet liquid and I no longer felt the need. As father would say 'mother would be proud'.
When I arrived back in the dark alley, I found my father waiting for me. "Well done little one. You've done well."
"I thank you Father." I replied happily.
"Your mother is pleased with your progress." He told me linking our arms together and escorting me inside.
"Where is mother?" I asked him quickly.
"She's busy. She can't be here for your awakening. It's too hard for her to fight the blood hunger whilst you still smell of human blood." Father explained.
"Not to worry, she'll be here when you're ready to meet her. You'll be surprised at the resemblance between the two of you." He nodded. "I won't be able to tell the difference."
