Chap 39 : Ghosted

Neveah fixe Charlie comme si elle avait deux têtes. Elle a un léger mouvement de recul.

"That's Charlie?"

Je crois halluciner quand j'entends une pointe de dégoût dans sa voix. Je respire pour rester calme.

"Yes. That's her."

Je viens me rassoir à ma place, Charlie toujours dans mes bras. Neveah s'écarte un peu, mais je fais semblant de ne pas le voir. Ok, t'as le droit de ne pas aimer les enfants, mais ce n'est pas non plus nécessaire de l'afficher aussi ouvertement.

"As I was saying, we started dating in December. Everything was perfect until the 8th of April. That's when Josh's mother, Charlotte, died. She was killed by Maddox because he wanted to avenge his sister, Bethanie, who was Henricks's previous mate and who is the mother of Mac."

Je fais une pause. Neveah secoue la tête et cligne des yeux.

"Wait what? He had two mates?"

"Yes and no. Usually, Lycans meet their soulmate before 25. At 27, Henricks hadn't met his so he thought he didn't have one —it's rare but it can happen— so he decided to be happy with Bethanie, who he truly cared about and all. They had Mac and then, a few months later, he met Charlotte, his true-mate, and that's when it all went bad."

"Don't tell me he killed Bethanie to be with Charlotte!?"

"No... But that's how Maddox interprets it."

Et peut-être même comment Henricks le vit, je raisonne en repensant à la tristesse que j'ai vue dans ses yeux. Neveah me regarde avec des yeux interrogateurs. Je prends une respiration avant de continuer.

"Josh told me Henricks left Bethanie for Charlotte because the Bond was too strong. But, breaking a bond, even if it's not with a true-mate, is very hurtful. Bethanie died of sadness or something like that. I know that it took years, Mac was seven or so."

"Huh." Fait Neveah. "No wonder Maddox's pissed. He's right! Henricks shouldn't have left Bethanie, it was like signing her death arrest!"

"I don't know. All those bonds and soulmate stuff are new to me. I don't know much, sorry."

"Hasn't it been three years since your here?"

J'ai un petit mouvement de tête, comme pour dire 'tu vois, c'est là que ça coince'.

"The thing is, I was with Josh when he learned is mother died. But! I didn't know anything about the Lycan side of the story, nor that I was pregnant at the moment. Josh disappeared a week later, without saying anything."

"Ah! He ghosted you!? The bastard!"

Je pouffe malgré moi. Je me calme vite.

"He had to leave : the war began at that moment. His father destroyed their phone —not that I had one anyway but still— and they were forbidden to contact anyone outside of the pack. Apparently, Sabrina and Tristan showed up and kinda kidnapped him."

"Kidnap...?"

"They showed up and threw him in the car. He said he didn't had the choice. That he had to obey the Alpha."

"Ah, yes. That Alpha voice..." Neveah marmonne avec une certaine hargne.

Je me fais une petite note intérieure de questionner Josh sur cette voix d'Alpha qui a l'air d'énerver Neveah au plus au point.

"So he just disappeared?" elle demande d'un coup, comme pour changer de sujet.

"Yup... Irony wants it that it's because he had to leave and all without ever seeing me again that he suddenly understood that I was his soulmate.... If I got it right. Funny, isn't it?"
