There was a sombre mood settled over the house, her dad and grandparents were all in black, as was Kaitlyn. Everything still hadn't settled in her mind, not really. She had said her goodbyes, cried what felt like a bucketful of tears but the fact that she was gone still hadn't settled in the young girl's mind or heart. How could she just be gone?

She sat down in the living room, at the foot of the armchair that had always been her mothers, the blanket draped over it still smelled faintly of her perfume. She would sleep here forever if she could, she just didn't want this to be the end.

A few days later, when it was just Kaitlyn and her dad left in the house, they decided to go through old albums, to try and remember happy memories. It was working, she felt more smiles than she did frowns, and the tears weren't threatening to spill over all the time. It was at this point that she saw her parents' graduation photos from university. They looked like they were in some stately home or something out of Harry Potter. They also looked to be in robes.

'What is that, dad?' she asked, excitement in her voice.

'That was the day your mum and I graduated from university. You know we met whilst we were at St Andrew's, right?'

She nodded mutely, her eyes fixed to the photo. 'I want to go one day.'

'To university?'

'No, well yes, but I mean to St Andrew's.'

'What would you want to study?'

Kaitlyn laughed, 'Maths, of course, you should know that dad!' Kaitlyn was a whiz at mathematics, it was by far her strongest subject in school. She had always been working well above average and she enjoyed the subject immensely.

'I should've known that really.' he smiled at her. 'You're going to have to work hard, it's not an easy place to get into.' He ruffled her hair before giving her a quick one-armed hug. 'Maybe we should pack these up, at least for today, and get some dinner?' He suggested a sad smile on his face.

Kaitlyn nodded, 'can I keep this picture though?'

'Of course sweetie, we will get a frame and you can have it upstairs in your room.'

Three years had passed, three years of it just being Kaitlyn and her dad in the house. Even though the house was too big for just the two of them they couldn't face moving. There were too many memories. It was the last link they had to Kaitlyn's mum. A sacred bond, still. Even now.

It was early evening. Kaitlyn was up in her room, books spread out around her as she worked on some English coursework, music softly playing in the background. She heard noises from downstairs, glancing at her clock she smiled and pushed herself to her feet. Dad must be home. She thought to herself as she headed down to greet him.

'Kaitlyn, can you come down here please?' Her grandpa said for the umpteenth time, as she was already halfway down the stairs. She sighed deeply.

She didn't understand why they were here and her dad wasn't. He was always home by now, and if he was going to be late, she was sixteen years old, she could occupy herself for a few hours. It wouldn't be the first time.
