Imagine newt still alive and with everyone in the safe haven.
3:24am.
Newt rolls over expecting a sleeping Thomas next to him. But the space is cold and empty.
He sits up confused and tired. Looking around the room, there's no sign of Thomas. He gets out of bed and makes his way to the window.
He peers through and sees a silhouette on the rocks looking over the water. He immediately recognizes it as Thomas. He's worried but not surprised.
He knows Thomas hasn't gotten a full night sleep since arriving at the safe haven.
He slips on a hoodie, not his. It's big on the sleeves and covers his hands, but it's warm.
He opens the door and heads towards the water where Thomas sits still on the rocks.
"Hey." Newt says quietly arriving by Thomas's side.
He doesn't move just replies with a quiet. "Hi."
"Couldn't sleep?" Newt sits down next to him.
"No."
"I'm sorry love." Newt puts a hand on Thomas's back and rubs up and down.
"I can't stop thinking." Thomas sighs and places his head down on Newts shoulder. Newt brings his hands up and plays with Thomas's hair delicately.
"What are you thinking?" Newt asks still stroking his hair.
"All those people. All the people we could've saved, that I should've saved." He's getting louder, clearly upset.
"Why don't you try looking at it the other way."
"What do you mean?" Thomas questions, quieting down.
"Think about all the people you did save. Minho, Aris, Sonya, Harriet. Me."
"I know." He lifts his head and turns to face Newt completely. "God I don't know how I would survive if I couldn't have saved you."
"You would've been just fine. But I'm glad you did save me." Newt assures.
"I love you."
"Love you too. Now why don't we get some sleep." Thomas laughs and stands up grabbing Newts hand.
They walk back to the hut and sleep the rest of the night away.
