I stared down at the bracelet on my right wrist, tapping my pencil impatiently as I waited for class to end. I continued wondering when I'd meet my soulmate, whose name was engraved on my golden bracelet. I was a bit of a hopeless romantic, so I always imagined meeting my soulmate in the forest under gold lighting that really made my eyes pop so that they could see the beauty in me that I wasn't aware of. I wanted someone to see me that way, to love me because I couldn't love myself.

Alatus... Where are you?

School ended and I began heading out, feeling a bit somber. All of my friends had found their soulmates. Well, except for one of them, but he didn't seem to be looking. He probably never cared about the whole soulmate thing, but I did. I was obsessed with finding my soulmate ever since I found out I had one. I always made sure to get dressed up or at least look presentable whenever I went outside because I never knew when I'd run into my soulmate, but after seventeen years of life, I never found a trace of 'Alatus'.

I wandered into the woods behind my house, where a small creek flowed. I sat and watched the water, dipping my hand in once in a while. A few tears escaped my eyes, but my expression barely changed. I sighed and wiped my eyes dry before hearing a voice behind me.

"Y/n."

"Huh?" I turned, seeing a familiar face. "Oh, Xiao! What are you doing here?"

"You already forgot?" He sighed in annoyance, crossing his arms over his chest. "We're studying today."

"Oh, that's right. Sorry, I'm a little out of it today."

"Just get inside."

I stood up and dusted off my pants, then headed back into my house with Xiao. He decided to help me study for school since I was having a hard time in pretty much all my subjects because it was difficult to pay attention during classes. I ended up complaining about my falling grades and he offered me knowledge. We headed upstairs, to my room, and I got out my notebooks.

"What first?" I asked.

"Literature."

"Eh? why?"

"Would you rather do math?" He retorted.

"No, no! Literature is fine..."

We both sat on the floor and I gave him some of the homework I was having trouble with. He explained what I had to do and gave some examples, so I tried it myself. I was just glad it was a worksheet instead of an essay.

"Can we take a break?" I groaned, laying down.

"It's only been an hour," Xiao pointed out.

"Exactly."

"Fine, we can have a break."

"Thanks!"

I sat up and glanced at my bracelet, rereading the name on it for the hundredth time of the day. Xiao seemed to realize what I was doing, but I didn't think it mattered much. I never really talked to him about my soulmate because I knew he wouldn't care since he never liked the topic of love. I recalled him saying once that he didn't believe soulmates existed at all.

"What's your soulmate's name?" He questioned.
