It had been a week since you softly rejected Charlie in his own home.
Since then, every time you were around Charlie he would find some way to make some pathetic small talk, or compliment you in some way. He was unrelenting, you'd give him that.
It was almost unbearable, but you coped. You did find Charlie at home from work more though, which you assumed was because of what you had told him that one.
You swore you almost snapped though when Charlie had called you in the living room one evening, beer in his hand and his open phone in the other.
He sat on the couch, looking at you with a mischievous grin. "Nicole just called, her sister Cassie is having a pool party in a few days. She wants you to come." Charlie told.
And after some grumbling and groaning, he pressured you into agreeing. And that's how you got here, sitting next to Charlie in his car as he drove the three of you to Nicole's sisters house.
It was oddly domestic as you looked over at him sitting in the drivers seat, the steering wheel laughably small in his big hands that were gripped around it.
He was practically hunched over as well, his body way too large for the small and dated car. You had to hold back a laugh.
Henry sat in the back seat, playing with some sort of action figure and making sound affects with his mouth quietly as he smashed the figures together.
"You'll love Cassie, she's a lot different then Nicole. You'll get along great." Charlie explained, eyes glimpsing over at you from the road.
You silently nod, not wanting to have small talk with him. It was like no matter how much you ignored him or acted uninterested, he still persisted.
And it wasn't that you were interested in him, it was actually quite the opposite. He was very attractive and he made harder for you the more he stayed home from work, but you just couldn't do anything about it.
You liked him, but it wouldn't work out, and you had told him that too (countless times in fact). Someone would end up hurt and you couldn't risk that.
So you were stuck with a very attractive man but forced to shy away from acting on anything. It was hard, but it was necessary, and that's what made it so painful.
"Did you bring a bathing suit?" Charlie continued, his eyes now fully on you.
You nodded. "Yeah, it's just this white bikini that I've had for ages, nothing special, really." You explained, tone flat and distant.
You could see Charlie's eyebrow cock, his lips sucking in a deep breath. He shifted in his car seat, nodding. "Oh that's...that's nice." He choked out nervously.
You couldn't help but turn your face away, a small smirk on your lips. If Charlie was going to torture you with small talk, then two could play at that game.
And truthfully, you had picked out that little white bikini just because Charlie was going to be there.
Eventually, the three of you arrived at Cassies house and Charlie introduced you to everyone. You noticed a few familiar faces like Nicole, but that was pretty much it.
Everyone else at the pool party were in the large backyard of the white colonial-type house, a grill sizzling with beef patties and hotdogs while various children splashed in the long pool.
You felt sort of awkward around everyone, nervously sipping your beer in an empty lawn chair you had found. You sat alone, but you didn't mind it. It wasn't like you knew many people there anyway.
