"Escape? You tried to escape!?" Zara yelled as we sped down the cold yet bright hallways, turning sharp corners now and then.
"I saw an open opportunity so I took it! I knew that the Mistress was gone for some meeting and that the sisters were on the other side of the castle so I took advantage of the time!"
We reached a long flight of stairs and begun to climb.
Zara shook her head. "First you travel to Romania for some foolish case, now you tried to escape? Do you realize how lucky you are to still have your head!? There's no exaggeration there!"
"I know!- look, can we talk about this later? Do you know where you're going?"
We reached the top and were presented with a large wooden door. Zara pushed it open, ushering me to follow as we spotted them across the tower. Indeed there were maids, not one, not two, yet three girls standing before the edge. The daughters faced them about several feet away, the Lady behind them, her expression unreadable. Zara and I edged closer to get a better look, careful not to disrupt the scene.
"-But I strongly advise you to surrender." The Lady stated, her voice firm and certain.
"Why, so you can kill us!?" The maid in the middle shouted.
"I have no time in lying to you, but you will be punished. It will be nothing compared to what you are contemplating right now. You'll just keep falling and falling and falling, hearing nothing but the birds and wind, and you will wish that you had changed your mind sooner."
"It'll be a hell of a lot more peaceful than what you demons have in store for us, witch!" The same maid said.
Cassandra bared her teeth at this. "Mother is doing you a kindness by offering you a second chance. Don't be foolish enough to deny it." She spat.
"Silence, Cassandra." The Lady demanded.
"What'll be the punishment?" The left maid asked.
The Lady continued. "Five full days in the cellar. You will be given food and water during the time."
They furrowed their brows in concentration, taking a moment to make a decision.
"...Now step off of the edge, and we will-"
"NO! I'M NOT PLAYING BY YOUR GODDAMN GAMES ANYMORE! I'VE SPENT MONTHS TRAPPED HERE, COPING WITH YOUR SADISTIC HORRORS, TRYING TO STAY ALIVE IN HOPES THAT MY FAMILY WILL COME TO GET ME!" The middle maid spat, tears streaming down her flushed face and strained neck. "BUT THEY WON'T, THEY FUCKING WON'T!!"
Her hands trembled violently as she sobbed, spit spilling from her lips and onto the cold dry crenulations. I realized my heart was pounding at an uncomfortable rate, watching the maid break down, sealing her fate, then reading the other maids' expressions which unfortunately resembled mine. They had tucked their legs away from the edge, their eyes pleading for the middle maid to do the same. But her eyes were gone, filled with nothing but conviction and abandonment. I turned my head to Zara, silently pleading with her to do something, though both of us were fully aware that we couldn't engage in the tense situation. The daughters held their ground, seemingly possessing no empathy for their captives. They wanted this to be over.
The middle maid stood stiff, balancing her feet upon the stone, gazing up at the corrupt sky overrun with a row of heavy clouds, midnight grey with a hint of olive green. The loud winds have ceased, nature giving the maid a chance to speak.
"Domnul mă va ierta, așa mi-a iertat familial." She muttered.
The right maid held her hand out. "Zelma, asteapta-"
