Nate and I met in a small bar down the street from my apartment, my best friend Jasmine and I had gotten into a bit of an argument over her new "boyfriend," if you want to even call him that. I hated him, mostly because I recently spotted him nuzzling into another girls' chest at the movie theaters on Friday afternoon. I pulled back the curtain for the pictures, and there he was, all snuggled and relaxed. As if he hadn't of been cheating.
The bar was small, smelled like BO and alcohol. I was sitting at the bar in a pair of jeans, boots, and a blazer with a white v-neck tee. "Now you do not look like a common bar girl?" He asked in a sharp suit.
"Take a look in the mirror pal." I scoffed and continued to babysit my drink.
"Point taken. I'm Nathan, well, Nate." He held out a manly hand with very expensive cuff-clinks attached to the end of his sleeve.
"Colette, and if you don't mind. What do you do?" I asked with a raised eyebrow and ignored his hand.
"I am on the board of the Seattle Grace Hospital. What do you do?" His smile was bright and I could get lost in his bright blue eyes. He couldn't have been more than 25 and he is already on the board.
"I am a pediatrician, I work at Pediatric Partners down the street from that hospital." I replied and sipped my drink. The burning taste of whiskey slithered down my throat as I tried to hide my blush. He sat and ordered a beer, looking at me ever so often. Ten minutes passed and I was 3 whiskeys in, him only 2 beers. I was buzzed and knew that I couldn't stand. Finally, I broke the silence. "You aren't any older than 25, how did you achieve things so quickly?" I questioned, slurring my words only a little.
He chuckled, " I graduated high school at 16, went to Harvard and graduated top of my entire class and early at only 20. The hospital skipped my internship and made me Chief of Surgeries at 23, now I just got promoted two months ago to being on the board. And I am 26." He finished and I was in awe. He is to smart, rich, and handsome for me.
I got up and walked away. "Colette?" He said and trailed after me.
"Look," I turned around to face him. "You sound like you are an amazing person, and I am sure you have a bunch of women throwing themselves at you, you're handsome and have an amazing career. Trust me you don't want to get involved with me...I-I am not the type of person that is easy to love or even get to know." I said and let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
"Colette, go to dinner with me this Saturday? Give me your address and I will pick you up at 7:30, I will not take 'no' for an answer." He said with a wide grin.
My brain was telling me no, don't do it. He will just do what Jeremiah did. But my heart said yes, so did my mouth. "Yes." Was all I could say.
"Great. See you Saturday. Oh, and I need your number, address, and email." He handed me his phone, already set to new contact. I entered my info and walked back to my apartment. The stairs are a short walk up and I insert the key into the lock and open the door.
"Colette!" Jas yells from the kitchen. I stay silent, still trying to process what had just happened not even 20 minutes ago.
"Look, I know you're mad but I need to ask you why you don't like him. I need to know why you think he isn't good for me." She sits on the couch next to me as I stare blankly at the half full cup of wine on the coffee table, clearly put there when I walked out.
"Colette. Say something." She says, impatient for me answer.
"I have a date this Saturday, and he is cheating on you." I mumble.
"Okay, what? How do you know this? And a date?" Her questions are annoying.
"Yes I have a date, his name is Nate and he is 26. And remember when we went to the movies and you went to the bathroom and I said I'd wait for you in the picture booth? Well I didn't see feet so I pulled back the curtain and Shawn was there with Mendi and he had his tongue down her throat. Sorry." I replied to her questions in one breath.
"Okay, we are going shopping. And I am sorry that we fought over Shawn, I hope Mendi and him are happy." Jas states and pads away to her bedroom. Minutes later she is dressed with makeup and hair curled. Seriously, she is a wizard.
"Okay, grumpy pants. We are going shopping, you haven't had a date in 2 years. You need first-date clothes!" She squeals.
Reluctantly, I stand up and go to my room. Taking off my blazer and v-neck, I change into a tank top with another flare tank top and change my boots into sandals. I fix my makeup and throw my hair into a bun. "Ready." I say and grab my bag and keys from the table beside the door.
The drive to the mall was short and it was less crowded, being a Tuesday and 3:30 in the afternoon. She immediately pulls me into Reflection, a shoe store. Apparently, me not being on a date in 2 years means that all the clothes are on her. I try on 3 pairs of shoes and finally we agree on a black 3-inch pair of pumps with a ankle holder and rhinestones towards the center. A sassy blonde woman rings us up and the shoes are $70, I try to stop the sale but she stops me. Next we walk around for a little looking for a good dress shop and I am once again pulled into Juicy's, a fancy dress and purse store. One dress catches her eye and I am trying it on. A black dress that fits my upper body and flares at the mid-point of my stomach, with a black and gold belt attached. Fortunately, the dress is only $25, but being Jasmine, she spots a clutch that is Jimmy Choo and buys it for me anyways. The final total comes to $850, where does she have this money on a fashion intern's salary you ask? Her parents are super rich and give her 10,000 every month. Which she splits with me.
"What do you want for lunch?" I ask, knowing that she can't resist a good plate or bowl of chili-cheese fries with bacon bits and mayo. She is a tiny person with an appetite of a teenage boy.
"Chili-cheese fries?" She asks and I nod my head. We laugh at someone else conversation on our way to the food court. she try's to pay once again and I shut her down. The total is only like $15, but at least I get to pay for one thing today.
After we eat, we start our shopping again. She takes me into an all accessory store named Etsy's, she buys me a $112 watch and $360 earrings. Finally, we are almost done and she takes me into another store that sells coats and makeup and perfume. She pays $775 for a black coat, $60 for a bottle of Vera Wang Princess perfume and $10 on Mac beige lipstick.
When we leave the mall it is only 5:00 and we decide to go to a nice bar. We get a few drinks and rent a movie from the Redbox outside then make our way home in her white 2012 BMW.
When Saturday rolls around, I am woken up at 8 in the morning to my doorbell. When I answer there is a bouquet of red roses handed to me and a note.
Looking forward to tonight, meet me downstairs at 7:30pm.
wear a coat and something nice.
Nate."Who was that?" Jasmine asks me as she walks out with her giant luggage bag, which she doesn't use for luggage. All of her makeup and hair products and skin products are in there.
"Nate...sent me flowers and this note." I said still sleepy.
"Awh! What does the note say?" I hand her the note and she walks back to my bedroom, I shuffle after her. Jas is frantically running around my room and my bathroom, the shower turns on and she commands me to get in.
"Wash your entire body with this, it'll make your skin soft and glow. Wash your hair with this, then shave with this, and after you have rinsed out your hair, apply this for 2-4 minutes and then rinse. Got it?" Her eyes look down at me, her being the taller one, I nod my head and yawn. I strip down and climb in, then climb out. It. Is. Freezing.
"Jas!" I yell and she comes running. "Why is the shower so damn cold?" I half yell.
"It cleans better and it makes the skin on your face number and easier to do your eyebrows and makeup." She smiles and walks away.
I try my best to follow her instructions after I get past the freezing water being cascaded over my body. I turn the shower head off and wrap myself in a towel. 15 minutes later; my hair is being dryed, my legs being lotioned, and eyebrows being plucked. By 7:20 I am completly ready to leave.
The date went smoothly, he opened the doors and payed for everything. He took me to an amazing resuraunt and ordered the fanciest wine. That night, I had fallen in love with Nathan James Kasey.
