Y/n's POV
I was busy helping set up in the mess hall when the sound of music filled the air. "So I asked your brother if it's cool I help you," a familiar voice said behind me. I turned to see Rodrick, and a slight blush crept onto my cheeks.
"Ah, decent choice of Iron Maiden," I replied, trying to keep my tone casual.
He grinned. "You know your stuff." I playfully shoved him away, and we both chuckled.
One of the appliance guys entered the hall, catching our attention. "So the stove is on, and we have a couple more appliances to set up," he informed us.
"Alright, thanks," Rodrick nodded at him before turning back to me. We resumed our tasks; I was scrubbing the table, but my mind was still clouded with anger towards my brother. Frustration built up, and before I knew it, my sponge broke in half. "Damn it!" I exclaimed in frustration.
Rodrick approached me, concern evident on his face. "You okay?" he asked quietly.
I didn't respond, just walked towards the storage room to grab another sponge. As I reached for a new one, I froze upon hearing voices from the adjacent room.
"Fuck, don't tell Cindy."
My heart sank. Derek was cheating on Cindy. Anger and sadness overwhelmed me. I had to tell her. I bolted from the mess hall, desperate to find her.
I spotted Cindy in the art room, assisting Nick. "Hey, Cindy, can we talk?" I interrupted, my urgency evident.
Cindy smiled at Nick. "I'll be back. Just finish putting out the paints," she said before following me out.
Once we were alone, I blurted out, "Derek is cheating on you."
Her reaction shocked me. She scoffed, disbelief written on her face. "I know you're mad at Derek, but he would never do that to me. We've been through so much bullshit!" Her words stung. "You know what, Y/n? Just stay away from me, from us. We're only camp counselors, not your friends," she declared, her tone final.
Heartbroken and feeling guilty, I returned to the mess hall where Rodrick had finished setting up. He had a bandana around his head, looking unexpectedly good. "So, why'd you ditch me?" he asked as I sat down heavily at the table.
"My brother is cheating on his girlfriend, and I told her," I muttered bitterly.
"I knew I didn't like your brother for a reason," Rodrick replied sympathetically. "But don't listen to Cindy. They're probably just stressed because of camp night and its backstory. Don't let them get to you." He placed a comforting hand on my knee, which surprisingly calmed me.
Before I could respond, the door flung open, revealing Chris. His eyes darted between us, noticing Rodrick's hand still on my knee. "What are you two doing?" he questioned with a hint of suspicion.
Rodrick quickly stood up. "Nothing. Let's go greet the campers," he said, grabbing Chris by the arm and leading him out.
As I stayed behind, I couldn't help but ponder my complicated feelings. Why did I feel this strange fascination with a counselor who was at least two years older than me?
