Her mother's name was carved in small beautiful letters inside the ring. "Faith" it read. Terri often slid the ring off to stare at the name late at night, she always wondered what kind of person her mom was.
Faith had died when Terri was one. Her father always said when Terri was old enough they'd talk about her. All he would say is "Terri, your mom left you that ring so you would know she was there. She will always love you and be there for you even if she is dead. Remember this." Terri would always reply with a faked smile.
As Terri comes back to reality and she sniffs the air in attempt to tell if the cake was ready. Sliding out of the uncomfortable chair she stretched and opened the oven. The red cake sat in the middle looking done, but to be safe she grabbs a toothpick and sticks it in the middle of the cake. Pulling it out she examines the warm residue. The cake was done and she smiles slightly at this.
Terri grabbs her homemade octopus oven mitts and reached into the oven. She carefully pulled out the hot pan and set it on top of the stove. Although she was happy the cake was done, she was now irritated she had to wait for it to cool off. Instead of sitting in the hard chair she turned towards the deer meat. She poked it and it proved to be cold like she had feared. She adjusted the stove heat to very low and set the deer in the oven to keep warm.
She sighs and walks to the living room. A small brown couch sits against the wall next to a desk where her father works on his projects. She walks over to the small worn-down book shelf and pulls out a small green book of poetry. A mew comes from the front door and Terri shuffles towards the door. Her hand grabs the cold silver handle. She slowly guides her hand to the lock and a loud click echoes through the small house. Terri pulls open the door and a small black kitten scurries in, shivering.
Terri blinks and shuts the door locking it again. She walks towards the kitchen and sets down the poem book. "Here kitty" she quietly calls as she kneels down. The small black kitten slowly limps towards her. It mews at her and pushes it's head into her hand. Terri pets the kitten and hesitantly lifts the kitten up and brings it to the bathroom. She examines the kittens left foot and pulls out the first aid. The kitten calmly lays next to the sink as Terri sifts through the first aid. Terri pulls out a cream colored bandage and puts the rest of the kit away under the sink. She lifts the kittens front foot and turns on the sink. Terri grabs the kitten and puts the kittens foot under the slow current of water. It mews slightly at the pain, and pulls back. The brown blood drains down the sink and Terri bandages the kittens foot, almost expertly.
She lifts the small black kitten and walks the short ways to the kitchen. She sets the cat down on the floor and washes her hands. Drying them off she stares at the cake, curious if it is... ...cool enough to frost yet. She softly pokes the cake and decides she can frost it. Carefully removing the cake from the pan she then retrieves the chocolate frosting. She pulls a butter knife out of the drawer and inserts it into the plastic container, slowly frosting the cake, with the kitten rubbing it's body against her legs.
Terri slowly backs away to admire her masterpiece. As she does this the lock clicks and she excitedly runs towards the door.
