THE FAMILIAR SMELL OF DISINFECTANT WAS all Mateo could focus on as a distraction as he sat on the hospital bed next to Bella.

The two were separated when they arrived but Mateo grew bored and left his own section and entered Bella's for company. The nurses had checked on the briefly to make sure there wasn't any bad bleeding but they still had to wait for the doctors stamp of approval before they could leave.

The owner of the van, Tyler, was in the bed next to them separated by a curtain. The dark skinned male repeatedly apologized to the two earning back repeated "it's fine"s back.

"Tyler, if you apologize one more time I will give you another reason to be in that hospital bed." Mateo threatened, causing the male to snap his mouth shut.

Letting out a small breath, Mateo shuffled around so he could lay down on the bed, his head resting on Bella's lap.

"Are you alright? Any tiredness? Nausea, dizziness, anything?" Bella asked him once more, worry in her voice as she played with his hair.

Sighing, Mateo opened his own eyes so he could look into her own, "For the millionth time, I feel perfectly fine Bella. The nurses and first responders said they couldn't find any major injures on me other than a few scratches and a incoming bruise on my hip."

Although he said that Bella didn't look convinced as she began the chew on her bottom lip out of nervousness. Thankfully, she couldn't ask anymore questions as Charlie pulled back the curtain. "There you two are, do you have any idea how worried I was when I found out?"

Neither Bella nor Mateo could respond before Tyler spoke, "Again, I'm really sorry-"

"I don't wanna hear anything from you, I should take away your license." The sheriff spoke, his eyes narrowing into a glare as he looked at Tyler.

"Wait no— dad it's fine, we are fine." Bella tried to call him, sending Tyler an apologetic look.

"I'm sor-" Tyler tried again but was cut off by the curtain being forced shut.

"Thanks, all the apologies where getting annoying." Mateo said, letting out a small yawn as he glanced over at the clock. He wanted to sleep but he knew if he did it would just worry both Charlie and Bella.

Fortunately, Mateo didn't have to rely on it any longer since the doors to the joint room was opened revealing a pale doctor with shining amber eyes that reminded the two Swan teens of the Cullens.

"I heard the Cheif's kids where here." The man spoke, walking over to the bed where Bella and I sat.

"Dr. Cullen." Charlie greeted the man.

Oddly enough, for just being their adoptive father Mateo noticed just how similar the Cullen children were to the man, and each other for what it's worth.

The three Swans watched as Carlisle grabbed the bored at the foot of the bed and began to flip through it. "So, I understand the two of you took quite a spill. Fortunately, Isabella came out fine. Might experience a bit of post traumatic stress but other than that I believe you are good to go."

Bella nodded at his words, muttering out a small "Just Bella" which the man heard and quickly corrected himself.

"As for you.." He looked over to Mateo then back at the foot of the bed in hidden confusion when he didn't see his patient folder. Noticing his wonder, Mateo gave him a sheepish smile before pulling the clipboard from behind his back, handing it over to the man who gave him a thankful smile. "Mateo, we might have to keep you a bit longer for scans. You can never be too careful with your condition and I'd rather be safe than sorry."

Mateo nodded in understanding, already used to it. Even if his outside injuries were minor farther investigation had to be taken to make sure his internal condition was alright as well since he wouldn't be able to tell if it something was wrong himself.

"Um, you know the whole thing would have been a lot worst if Edward wasn't there." Bella added earning looks of confusion from both Mateo and Charlie.

"Edward, your boy?" The sheriff asked.

"Ella, you do know he was across the lot right? Maybe you should check her head again Doc." Said Mateo as he looked at Bella in concern.

"I'm fine, but it was amazing. He got over so fast when he was nowhere near us." Bella explained, eyes focused on the older Cullen as if hoping for an answer.

"Sounds like you're lucky." Dr. Cullen responded, a forced smile on his lips.

Snorting, Mateo bumped Bella in the side, "You don't have to entertain her Doc, a lot of people believe their crushes are secretly Superman. Let me guess, he stopped the moving van with his bare hands as well."

"Yeah, how'd you know? Did you see it too?" Bella ignored the previous sentence in favor of asking about the last one making Mateo let out an annoyed groan.

The Swans were released about an hour later after being given the green light that all of Mateo's scans came back normal save for the x-ray of his leg which revealed a minor break in the growth plate of the fibula resulting in him being forced to wear a boot for the next 6 weeks or so.

Mateo didn't really mind, this wasn't the first time he had to weak the heavy black boot and it likely wouldn't be the last either.

He was given a crutch to help him walk since he was told to try to avoid pressure on his ankle. The fracture was minor but they didn't want him to risk making it worst on accident, especially since he wouldn't know right away that he did.

"I'm going to go sign some paper work. You two should call Reneè." Charlie said, looking at the two teens.

"What, you called mom?" Bella asked, resulting in a shrug from Charlie, "She's probably worried sick. I'll call her and let her know we are fine." Pulling out her phone, she tucked her hair behind her ear before walking away to get privacy.

Charlie turned towards Mateo to see what he was about to do only for the wavy haired teen to point in the direction of the waiting room, "I'm gonna go sit down."

Charlie nodded before turning and walking over to the desk leaving Mateo alone. Releasing a breath, Mateo gripped his couch and began to slowly walk in the direction of the seating area, pausing when she saw Edward speaking with Bella.

Smirking, Mateo walked over to the tensed teens and smacked Edward on his shoulder, "Well if it isn't Mr. Clark Kent himself. Here for the follow up interview?"

The two looked at Mateo in confusion for a moment before turning back to each other, having the joint thought of ignoring him. "If your not going to let this go, then I hope you enjoy the disappointment." Edward said before turning and leaving an upset Bella and a lost Mateo.

Before Mateo could even question what happened, Bella turned around and walked off leaving him all alone in the hallway.
