Octavia's pov

I woke up in a strange room. I was still so tired but I knew I needed to get up and get a game plan with Lyren. My sister wants me and Lyren to go up against each other in a series of trials. Sounds more like games to me. It's apparently going to test your quick thinking skills, your agility, and your ability to lead. The only thing I might succeed at is the agility course but Lyrenna is great at all of them.

Heck, I don't even want to lead these people. Where were they when I needed them? Where was my sister when I was about to die? Where was my sister when Avery died? Those people inside and outside these walls, were never there for me, my sister wasn't either. For myself or Avery. So why should I be willing to lead them? My sister wants an heir so badly, have a damn child.

"Ha, yeah right." I say to myself. Anstid always hated kids, and she was never a great sister to me. I sincerely believe her people won't even want me to lead them because I could be the thing that tears them all apart. Lyrenna is so much better for them, I mean, she basically has the team of people she needs already.

I was about to go out and see Lyren but I then noticed it was very dark outside. I must have slept longer than I thought. I decide to go out anyway and see if I could find somewhere to train. I run over to the closet and grab my sword and sheath, my cloak, and boots too.

I open my door slightly and look down the hall to see if anyone is there. When no one comes, I open my door so I can slip out. I slip the hood of my cloak up over my head so no one could really see my face. I walk quickly down the hallway, glancing over my shoulder every now and again.

I round the corner leading to the great hall and I see guards slumped against the wall. I walk closer and see blood all over the floor and walls. I notice then that someone had slit their throats. I walk carefully around the bodies and notice that the great hall's door is slightly ajar. Slipping inside, I see a cloaked figure sneaking up behind my sister who is staring down at a table.

The figure draws it's sword and is about to kill her, when instincts kick in. I walk up behind it quietly and cut it down quickly just as its sword is about to come down on Anstid. Black liquid coats my sword, arms, and face. Athra, a poisonous one too.

"AH!" I yell as the blood begins to burn. "Dammit that hurts." I say wiping it off on my cloak.

"Oh my gosh, Via you shouldn't have done that." She says looking down at me, she always was much taller.

"Why not? I saved your life didn't I?"

"Yes, but that could have been what I needed to end this war. And you shouldn't even be up." She scolds

"You know what? I don't give a crap about your war, but if I had let this thing kill you, without a heir, your war would have been civil." I say staring up at her, sheathing my sword. "And I'm up because I was trying to find a place to train, you know, for your trials." I say walking away.

"Two floors down, three hallways to your left, fifth door on your left." She says dismissing me with a hand. She turns back to the table.

"Thanks." I say, hatred dripping from my voice.

I walk to where she says and hear yelling coming from it. I open the door and see Lyren, Beckett, and Dray. Lyrenna and Dray are sparring and Beckett is reading multiple books.

"Oh hey Octavia." Beckett says, looking up for a second.

"Hey, what are you reading?"

"Books your sister has had written to tell future generations how the heiress games will work."

"The heiress games? Oh that must be what she calls her trials. So how does this work?" I say reading over his shoulder.

"The present commander chooses two girls, one related to a higher ranked family on the up top, and one who shows she could lead best."
