Misty Swamp encounter

Elena and I, Darrin, have been friends for a long time. The two of us have never really go out much anymore. That one day we almost got caught by a person who had been surveying the lands, no doubt they would've known about us.

Elena thought we should go to the mountains, I suggested the woods since it was a lot like home. She eventually gave in and agreed with me. We packed everything we could into a few backpacks. Necessary supplies such as water, foods, snacks, and a map were in my bag. Elena insisted on carrying the backpack with cameras, lights, and tents because it felt comfortable with her.

We didn't have a car so we just walked to the nearest forest we could scout out. The nearest and biggest forest we found was the Misty Swamp, although being a swamp we didn't mind camping there for a while at all.

Once we got there we felt right at home. Elena set up the tent and turned back at me only to be greeted with a flash and a snap. I had grabbed the camera from her when she didn't notice and planned on taking a photo of her when she least expected it.

"Proof of your natural beauty!" I exclaimed.

"Not true! I was expecting this and decided to look he way I did in the picture," she argued.

Me knowing this was all just a cover-up to never prove me right I rolled with it and just sat the camera down. I looked out for any people who might catch us. I only heard a few birds, the occasional wind brushing through the plants, and then a snap of a twig.

I turned to the direction of the sound only to realize Elena had stepped on a twig. I sighed in relief but stayed on edge. Someone might've heard that, I thought to myself. She saw sorry in my face and reassured me that we were far enough for people to chicken out on looking for us.

I took a deep breath and relaxed myself. After the coast was cleared I helped Elena put up the last parts of the tent since she was struggling so much.

"There! A tent!" She exclaimed with a smile.

"Yeah, a tent I helped you build up." I declared.

"Help or no help I did it." She said.

I rolled my eyes and started settling in the tent. Elena came in shortly after with her backpack. I pulled out a small notebook that I had written stories to tell so I could pass time. Elena waited anxiously to hear this story since I had promised her for so to read it to her.

"In a world, where humans fought alongside angelic, animal hybrid humans, and elven people to defeat the enemy. The enemy were made up of the demons, witches, and beasts who wished to take power over all things. Beasts had no interest in power, but instead wished to live peaceful lived. This is where our story begins, with the life of the beastly enemy. . ."

Elena looked ecstatic yet sad hearing the word enemy relentlessly. However, I continued knowing that's what she would've wanted.

"Beasts were made up of so many creatures, the weakest of them all being an amphibious creature who started this whole peaceful way of living. They were axolotls who were turned into 'soldiers' for their regenerative skills. However, they would quickly be wiped out by their own allies. The strongest of all were the next creatures that could've potentially sought out peace. Shadow manifestations, or more commonly known as shadowed souls, and wendigos, cannibalistic creatures whom which have killed thousands of humans. . ."

"Despite their strength, shadowed souls and wendigos were quickly dieing out. Eventually, enough for humans to have the chance to hunt down witches and enemies alike. Nowadays, wendigos and shadowed souls have yet to be seen since the war."

I closed the notebook and looked up at Elena. Her face was disappointed.

"Hey, what's wrong?" I asked.
