The wind howled outside the orphanage like a beast clawing to get in . The windows of the ancient building rattled in with each gust, their wooden frames swollen with age . Inside , the dim corridors of St. Theresa's Home for girls echoed with silence, interrupted only by the distant tick of an old grandfather clock .
Avni sat on the edge of her small bed , her eyes fixed on the full length mirror that stood propped in the far corner of the room . The mirror hadn't always been their . it had appeared two nights ago , left mysteriously in her dorm after curfew. No one knew where it came from - not even the stern Sister Leela , who usually noticed everything .
Avni asked about it . No one claimed it.
The mirror called her .
Literally .
Sometimes it whispered .
Sometimes it shimmered .
And tonight it was glowing.
Avni reached for the pendant she always wore- a small , cracked ruby on a rusted silver chain. She didn't know where it came from either . She'd had it ever since she was a baby and was found at the orphanage gates , bundled in the midnight -black blankets the gem wrapped tightly around her neck like a lifeline. No note . No name . Only the neck-lace.
And a dream.
A recurring one , where a silver throne burned in moonlight and voice , deep and ancient, whispered her name .
Tonight , the dream felt closer.
She stood up and padded barefoot across the creaky wooden flow toward the mirror. Her reflection stared back at her- same long , messy black hair, same curious brown eyes. But then just for a second , something shifted.
Her reflection blinked late.
And her eyes turned red.
Avni gasped , stepping back . Her heart pounded like warning drum.
" Why ? what have I done " She whispered to herself , hugging her arms . She don't know why these all things happens to her " Stop doing that please " she looked at the mirror
But the mirror kept glowing . And the reflection ?
It smiled .
No. Not smile- a smirk .
And then , it was just her again .
A cold sweat broke across her forehead. The pendant pulsed once on her chest, warm and alive.
She turned away quickly , crawling back into bed and pulling the covers over her head , like she had when she was six. Her only friend in the orphanage , Pia was already fast asleep in the bed next to her , snoring softly .
Avni shut her eyes tightly , willing the image away.
But sleep didn't come easily that night .
--------------
Next Morning ,
Sunlight sliced through the cracked windows of the dorm . Birds chirped like nothing strange had ever happened . Avni sat in the mess hall , staring into her bowl of watery porridge as Pia animatedly talked about her fantasy- being adopted by rich couple who owned a chocolate factory . like a 3 year old , who says she was 15
"You'll see , " Pia grinned , brushing her curly hair from her face . " One day I'll be on yacht , and you'll be signing for millions" .
Avni Smiled faintly . Pia always said things like that " You think too highly of me ".
