That night, we ate chicken nuggets, the last meal prepared and left by our mom one day before she was killed. When She went on a trip or when she was busy, she used to prepare some food in advance so that my father could find something to eat in an emergency. I put on my mother's jacket and sat on the porch to breathe in the cold air to froze my feelings. I still couldn't believe it. I could not believe her death. I still had hope that she would come to the balcony now and warn me that if I stay here, I will get cold. I wanted to be woken up and to be affected by this nightmare for days. I could not get used to it. I could not agree with that.
"It will be cold for you" Henry closed the balcony door. He wrapped his scarf around my neck and sat next to me. He was wearing a black short-sleeved shirt. I wiped my tear-stained face with my hand.
"I wanted to get some air. I'm drowning inside" I still holding the dish of nuggets in my palms. It was my mother's last meal. We would never be able to eat anything left of her.
"I understand. I'm like you. I feel like I do not belong anywhere, can't find a place for myself "I heard my breath trembled as I tried to take a deep breath. I didn't have the strength to say something.
"How did it happen?" I asked
"Natalie, I do not think this is right ..."
It doesn't matter if I know sooner or later" I interrupted. "I have to know" Henry did not want to talk. Or he couldn't talk. He was looking at the sea view. "It was found near the house," he said. I had nothing to say. I closed my eyes. My mother's body appeared on the floor with her hands outstretched. I could not adapt at all. I was forced to live with an event that I did not dare to read in the news. Henry listened to the silence with me for a while.
"She said I am guilty," he said.
"About what?"
"About your leaving. She told me I could make you stay if I wanted. She said that you would not listen to anyone but me"
"It wasn't your fault," I said, lifting the scarf around my waist.
He looked at me fake smile. As he can't lie, he is too bad at an artificial smile.
"I..." My voice drowned out, and my newly dried cheeks were soaked in tears again.
"How can I live without her? I could not even say goodbye to her"
Henry wrapped his hand around my neck and pulled me to himself. He could not find a word to comfort me. He listened to me cry softly.
"I promise you" he said, "I'll find that bastard somewhere. I will kill him with my own hands"
"I will kill him with my own hands" I repeated with a whisper.
