Beau’s P.O.V
Becca and I arrived outside a small bungalow on the outskirts of London. The surrounding houses weren’t the nicest but they were still a step up from the dump we had stayed in last night.
‘Are you sure about this?’ Becca asked me nervously. I reached out for her hand and interlocked my fingers with hers.
‘Only if you are’ I told her softly. She took deep breath and nodded before slowly leading me up to the door. A tall young lady answered the door in what looked like a uniform.
‘Oh, hello Becca. I thought you were in America?’ the lady looked confused looking at the two of us.
‘It was Australia, but yeah, I’ve come back for a week... is mum around?’ Becca asked the lady. She nodded and held the door open for us both to go through. I followed Becca through the small corridor; the walls were all very bare with only the essentials in each room. She opened the door to the last room of the house, where the muffled sound of the TV was coming from. In the corner sat a skinny, gaunt woman who had the same blonde hair as Becca, she looked at us blankly for a few seconds then eased into a smile.
‘Hello Mum’ Becca whispered as she went to sit down in the arm chair next to her. I hung back nervously but Becca beckoned me to join her.
‘How are you doing Becca?’ her mum asked with wide eyes.
‘I’m great thanks mum, this is Beau by the way’ she held her hand pointing to me. Her mum narrowed her eyes at me then looked back at Becca.
‘I’ve not met him before have I?’ she asked. Becca shook her head.
‘No you’re right you haven’t. This is my boyfriend’ Becca smiled at me.
‘Boyfriend? You’re married love!’ she chuckled and acting like I wasn’t even the room. Becca looked down and sighed.
‘No, I’m 18 next week remember? No marriage for me yet’ Becca half laughed as her mum came out of her confusion a little.
‘Of course, sorry love... erm Sophie? Can you get me Becca’s present please?’
The woman from before came in and passed Becca a scruffy package wrapped loosely in baby pink paper. Becca took the present and started to unwrap to reveal a dark green hand knitted scarf, she sighed but then smiled, bringing her mum into a hug.
‘It’s lovely, thank you Mum’
‘No problem, I just thought I’d give it to you now and save you waiting! But of course you’ll come and see me on your birthday?’ her mum asked, again wide eyed.
‘I’m going back to Australia for my birthday’ she sighed, holding her mums hand.
‘Australia? AUSTRALIA? WHY ARE YOU THERE, WHY ARE YOU LEAVING ME BECCA?’ her mum started to raise her voice as she shook her hand away from Becca. The lady in the uniform came back in and tried to calm her down as I followed Becca into her bedroom. She fell down onto her bed, with her head in her hands. I crept over to her and removed her hands, showing her face to me.
‘I told you this was a bad idea, I’m so sorry Beau’ she whispered as a tear rolled down her cheek.
‘Don’t be sorry! I’m glad I met your mum’ I smiled, wiping the tear away from her cheek. ‘W, what’s wrong?’ I asked nervously, not knowing whether it was an appropriate question to ask.
‘It’s a severe case of early Alzheimer’s. It started the middle of last year and it’s just got worse from there. We had to employ Sophie to look after her whilst I was at school and then I would take it from there, trying to improve her memory but it would never work. Some days it would be horrible, she wouldn’t even know who I was, this a good day for her I guess’ Becca sighed, fiddling with her fingers as she spoke. I didn’t know what to say, I just brought her into a big hug. I couldn’t imagine what she had been through and if today was a good day I’d hate to think what a bad day was like.
