I woke up on the couch, with Candy laying on top of me. The sun was shining through the dark blue curtains. The tv was off. An alarm went off on Candy's phone.
Candy woke up. She just turned the alarm without looking. I sat up. My phone wasn't on the table. It wasn't in my pockets either.
Where was it?
I slowly stood up and silently walked down the hall. A phone vibrated in Beverly's bedroom. The door was cracked. I pushed it further open. No one was in there.
I walked right in. My phone was on the night stand. A message from Ash appeared on the screen. It was a photo of a bald, light skinned man in that white car.
There was our shooter.
Candy needed to know about this. I walked out to the living room. She wasn't there. But her phone was still on the table.
I ran down the hall when I heard loud thud from the bathroom. Then, I swung the door open. Candy looked at me in surprise. She was holding a white round brush. I caught my breath.
"So...what's going on here?"
"I was waiting for the white car to come back," Candy said, closing the window.
"Check out what that piece of shit looks like."
I showed her the photo. She frowned and dropped the brush. Her hands were shaking. Just like the night we got shot at.
When I find that motherfucker, I want Candy to be there with me. I took her hand in mine. She let out a breath.
"I can't believe he had the nerve to bring his trigger happy ass here!"
"He should watch his back. We'll get him soon," I replied, kissing her hand.
"How?"
"I don't know yet."
Just then, I heard a giggle from the next room. Candy gasped. The smell of sweat and something else filled my nostrils. It wasn't coming from this room.
Candy walked out of the bathroom. A minute later, I walked out and stopped in my tracks. Beverly's door was still wide open. I was almost speechless. Beverly was sitting on Merlot's lap, kissing him.
"Good morning, y'all!" I yelled.
They stopped kissing and looked at me in shock. Beverly got off Merlot and pulled her gray skirt down. Merlot put a white pillow on his lap. He covered his face with his palm.
"Where did you come from?" Beverly asked, breathing heavily.
I leaned on the door frame. "Don't worry about that. What's this?"
"Nothing."
"It doesn't look like nothing."
"Why can't you mind your business?"
"Because you left the door open."
She rolled her eyes. I couldn't believe she was hooking up with him the whole time. How did I not know this before?
Merlot got up and approached me. I could barely take his glare seriously because he still had that pillow to his crotch. It was hard not to laugh in his face.
"What the fuck is your problem, man?" Merlot demanded.
I snickered. "You need to stand down before asking me anything."
"Move, asshole."
"I'm not moving until you tell me how long you've been fucking my sister."
"Just a couple weeks. How long have you been fucking mine?"
"I don't have to tell you that."
He pushed me down. I got up and smacked him upside his head. That pillow fell to the floor. The bulge in his pants was visible.
Shit. This just got awkward. Merlot looked at me in shock. He slammed the door in my face.
I stormed out of the house. Who the fuck did Merlot think he was? He had no right to slam that door in my face. He was the asshole, not me.
My car was gone. I clenched my fists. Damn. I checked my pockets and my phone wasn't there. How could this day get any worse?
I went back to the house. Beverly and Candy gave me dirty looks when I walked in. My phone rang. I was about to answer, but Beverly snatched it out of my hand. She threw it at the wall across the room.
"Why the hell did you do that?" I yelled.
Beverly's eyes filled with tears. "Because you were being nosy. How dare you?"
"Wrong. I didn't hear you giggling on purpose."
"Bullshit! You eavesdropped on us, so you could barge in."
"Bev, you know he didn't do that. He didn't even know what you and Merlot were doing," Candy said.
Beverly crossed her arms. Candy covered her face with her hands. I noticed my phone was broken into pieces on the floor. You know what? Fuck Beverly. If she can be petty, I can be petty too.
So, I walked to her room and swung the door open. The room was empty. Merlot and Beverly's phones were on the night stand. I grabbed Beverly's phone and sent a message to Ash.
Can you pick me up? My car was stolen.
When Merlot's phone rang, I checked it. Someone named Tyra was calling him. Fuck it. I answered the call.
"Hey, Merlot. Did you tell her yet?" Tyra said.
I hung up. That was all the information I needed to expose Merlot as a liar. Everyone needed to know.
I left the bedroom and dropped Merlot's phone on the table. Beverly and Candy stared at me with furrowed brows. Merlot had to be in the the hot seat too. It won't be just me.
"Your boyfriend has another girlfriend."
"That's a lie. He wouldn't cheat on her," Candy intervened.
"How would you know? You just met him two weeks ago."
"I know him better than you do."
"Who's Tyra, then?"
"I don't know, because that's not my business."
Beverly smugly smiled at me. I couldn't believe that Candy was siding with her lying ass brother instead of me. Merlot's phone rang on the table. I answered the call.
Merlot will be the one getting accused. I put Tyra on speaker. Beverly's smile disappeared.
"Hi, honey. We need to talk in person. Here's the address," Tyra said.
Merlot's phone chimed. Beverly snatched it off the table. I smiled as she stormed out of the house.
