Biana shivered, pulling her woolen sweater tighter around her. It didn't help at all; it was raining and she would probably return home smelling like a sheep. What would her mom say? Of course, as usual, Alden had been too busy to pick her up from school and Della knew it was Alden's responsibility to pick their daughter up.
He never remembered.
None of Biana's friends stopped by.
So she watched, as one by one, everyone either walked away or drove away, and she was left by herself.
Something hot rolled down her cheek. It was ridiculous, crying at something like this. And it was normal too, that she was the last one to leave. Her brother got his drivers license and never even bothered to check up on her. You know, your sister Fitz. The one who was always there for you. The one you paid back by ignorance.
Even the great Sophie Foster, the one who was her supposed best friend, walked by without a second glance at who she was.
Couldn't blame her.
Biana was nothing more than a pretty face.
And nobody had even bothered to remind her the weather forecast. Fitz had two umbrellas. Two! He used them both for himself. Best to protect that ballooning head of his.
More bitter thoughts raced through her mind.
The other day, she'd been backed up into an alley by a creepy dude. Thankfully she had heels on and kicked him where it hurts.
Sopping sneakers didn't have quite the same effect.
The final few students exited. Amongst them she spotted the twins: Tam and Linh. They were new, and super nice, and the girl was interested in fashion and makeup too (and also had a fiesty streak), and the boy was really really really cute.
Biana stood off to the side, expecting them to rush by into the car now waiting. Instead, Tam tapped Linh on the shoulder and whispered something in her ear. She nodded, and they approached Biana.
"Hi. You're Biana Vacker, right?" asked Tam.
She nodded shyly, which was unlike Biana. Probably the cold getting to her.
"Yeah. And you're Tam and Linh?"
"Yep. We came over here 'cause you seemed to be waiting really late. What happened?"
Biana laughed mirthlessly. "Yeah, apparently my dad forgot about me. But I'm okay. I'll just wait for him. You should get going, someone's waiting."
Linh looked at her for a few moments, then unexpectedly leaned in and hugged her. It was very short, but caught Biana completely by surprise. Then Linh smiled. "See you tomorrow!"
Tam lingered for a few more moments. A flush spread through his cheeks. "Um, here."
He drew out a long black stick from his backpack, which turned out to be an... umbrella. "You look cold. Here ya go. As Linh said, see you tomorrow!"
For a few moments Biana said nothing. The few moments were enough for Tam to have walked away. Her fingers fumbled to open it up. Now, as she leaned back against the wall with the umbrella over her head, she felt as though it weren't the only thing keeping her warm.
