The source of darkness does not really have a beneficial use

The source of darkness does not really have a beneficial use. The first vision of it has melted into history so far away, that it has no written record.

For years, minds have pondered over it, trying to make their suspicions verifiable, and claim the credit. However, no one has ever come close to finding an authentic source.

Until...

Luna, one of very few whose mind had not crossed the thoughts of the Source of Darkness, found the long-lost secrets of it.

It was a dark, misty day, on Luna's fourteenth birthday when it happened. She was in her garden when she knew the source of darkness was watching her. Or, in other words, the NightWalkers. She knew the source of darkness was the NightWalkers. How she knew, or what form they took, she did not know. The information just came to the top of her mind, buried beneath her memories. She was the only human alive who knew about the NightWalkers.

Luna could not see the NightWalkers, for they could be anything unseen. They could be invisible, the air, or even just the lack of light.

Wherever Luna went, the NightWalkers followed her. She sensed them in her presence, as the light dims when she enters a room.

One year later, Luna's fifteenth birthday.

When Luna awoke on her fifteenth birthday, a hooded figure stood before her, dressed in a pastel yellow cloak. She was brandishing a small jar brimming with a thick paste, so light yellow it could have been mistaken for white.

The stranger bowed. ''My name is Cyrus.''

"What do you want?" Luna asked.

He replied in a raspy voice, "You know what the NightWalkers are?"

"Yes...," Luna said slowly, "why?'"

"I am a DayWalker. And so are you."

"I'm a human."

"You've never known your parents before. You've lived alone with the maid all your life. Correct?"

Luna nodded.

"Have you ever wondered why?"

Again, Luna nodded.

"The DayWalkers are the opposite of NightWalkers. NightWalkers prefer to be alone. They are part wolf. They skulk around in the darkness and are blinded by the midday sunlight.

The DayWalkers and NightWalkers are a small clan. DayWalkers are the Source of Light, and, as you know, NightWalkers are the Source of Darkness. The Walkers have to remain small, and if you don't see your clan when you turn fifteen years old, you become human.

So your parents volunteered to abandon you. But clearly, you are too powerful.

The NightWalkers have noticed that, too. It is possible that they can make you switch sides, and become a NightWalker."

"Where are my parents?" Luna asked, appalled.

'"With the rest of our clan, which is where I'm going to take you today." He handed Luna the jar. "This contains the purest of sunlight."

Luna took the jar cautiously. "What does it do?"

"Anything."

Cyrus had said to not pack anything apart from special items, and then they were leaving at midday. But Luna had nothing special. She sat, waiting for him to appear, grasping the jar he had given her. Expecting the doorbell to ring, she waited at the front door.

"I'm here."

Luna swivelled and saw Cyrus standing behind her.

Cyrus extended a hand. "The sunlight, please."

Luna gave the small jar to him, and he opened it. Then he smeared his forearm with a bit of the sunlight and clasped her shoulder tightly. The world whisked away and reappeared in less than a second. They were in a small forest clearing, with trees neatly tucked away so the sun shone onto them. The sun felt warm and reassuring. It gave her positive strength, and she'd never appreciated it as much in her life. The clearing was filled with around twenty people. The children were playing together, and the older ones were either sharpening their weapons, cooking or mixing some strange pastes.

Cyrus let go of her shoulder. "Come with me."

Luna followed him across the clearing, and they entered a wooden hut.

It was small but cozy. On either side of the front door were lanterns that filled the room with a gentle glow. The cabin was very messy, but perhaps that was what was so cozy about it. There were a number of desks, littered with jars of that strange paste. In one corner of the room, there was a small stove, with a bucket filled with water adjacent to it.

"I'll be right back, stay there," Cyrus sauntered out the door.

A few minutes later, there was a scrambling sound from behind a desk.

Cautiously, Luna hurried over to the desk where the noise was made. She slowly pushed the desk out of the way, and it made a horrible screeching sound. Staring up at her, a girl that looked around twenty years old crouched in front of her. She was wearing a black cloak, with the hood so low it covered most of her eyes.

"Oh-" she muttered. She seized Luna and hauled her across the room. Luna wrenched free and pointed her finger at her.

 "Custos Luminis!" she screamed.

Flames ignited the NightWalker, and, howling, disappeared.

A few moments later, Cyrus returned with two DayWalkers.

"There was a NightWalker here, and she tried to abduct me. But I burned her, and she disappeared," Luna explained.

"Yeah, you've got to be careful. They're going to try and take you. Sit, all of you," Cyrus brought four chairs over. Everyone took a chair and sat. Then, he hurried over to the stove and handed a steaming goblet to everyone.

Luna took a sip, and, as the swirling drink entered her mouth, her tongue felt like it was burning.

"What is this?!" she gasped.

"It's Sunlight drink," Cyrus replied. "The more sunlight, the hotter it is. This has one drop, sunlight is very rare. Anyway, Luna, here are your parents, Aelius Vincent and Phoenix Vincent."

"Hello, Luna!" Phoenix smiled.

"Hey, mum... and dad..." Luna said.

"Mmm," Aelius grunted.

"Aelius and Phoenix, you'd better take Luna to your home," Cyrus opened the door, and Luna followed her parents out. Aelius ambled out into the forest, while Phoenix escorted Luna into one of the cabins.

It was slightly larger than Cyrus' and less scruffy. There were two small sofas in one corner, and in the other was a stove and a bucket full of water. Next to the bucket, was a desk with the chair tucked in. There was also a door, which Phoenix opened, and lead Luna in. It was empty, apart from a single bed in the corner of the room.

"You can sleep, now," Phoenix closed the door behind her.

Luna crawled into bed and fell into a sleep full of turbulent dreams.
