— CHAPTER ONE,
life on the ring.

"I LOST PEOPLE." A woman scribbles in her book. "A lot of them. I could make a list of their names. But why would I when they're the first things I think of when I fall asleep and the first things I think of when I wake?"

The woman adjusts herself on the bed, brushing her hair out of her eyes.

"This is my new memory book. Lincoln and Luca always told me to remember things for what they are. And that's what I've been doing since I was locked in a bunker for three months." She continues to write. Tears gather in her eyes as she writes Lincoln's name, "so here we are. Once again, drawing memories, writing them. The good and the bad. There is another book, it holds more of my memories. Whenever this book is, the other is not far. To whoever finds this book in the future. . . my name is Ruby Carson and I survived. Enjoy my story."

Ruby Rowan Carson shuts the book. She leans over and sets the book on the metal bedside table. She shuts off the lamp.

"Are you seriously still awake?" Comes a muffled voice from under the covers.

Her speckled eyes dart over to the man's side of the bed. All she can see is a giant lump buried under the covers and a tiny bit of his curls.

"Yes, I am. I can't sleep," Ruby answers as she lays down, finally getting comfortable. She stares up at the ceiling.

The man who had been facing away from her shifts so that he can face her. She rolls over so that they are eye-to-eye. He reaches out and gently sweeps his thumb over her cheeks.

"You're beautiful, Sweetheart," he whispers.

"Oh, shut up, Bellamy." She rolls her eyes, a small laugh slipping past her lips. Bellamy smiles at the sound. As quickly as her happiness came, it fades. Bellamy watches as his girlfriend's eyes turn solemn. "It's been thirty-two days, an entire month."

"A month stuck in space." Bellamy shakes his head, "at least you're getting better."

"Thank God, I don't how much longer everyone can deal with my sudden panic attacks due to being trapped in an endless black void," Ruby huffs.

"You can't help your claustrophobia, Ruby. That's not something you can just tell to go away, Sweetheart," Bellamy's brows furrow.

"I know," she whispers. She shifts, resting her head on his bare chest. "Monty said the algae should be blooming in about three weeks."

"I know. I was there when he said it," Bellamy replies.

"Don't be a jerk," she hits his chest. "Ryland isn't healing properly either."

"Echo has been watching over his burns. They're healing but she says they may never heal all the way." Bellamy says, watching her closely as he does.

"He's going to have to use the damn wooden cane for the rest of his life." Ruby whispers, mostly to herself.

"At least now you can teach him to use it to his advantage in fights," Bellamy tells her.

"Yeah," she mumbles, "I guess, I can."

"If you don't stop, I'm going to kick you in the nuts so hard, they rupture." Ruby snaps harshly, glaring at her big brother over her shoulder.
