Winter Kiss

'Hold tight, don't move!'

I squeezed a drop of iodine from the bottle and he screamed in pain.

I covered my ears and laughed. 'Quit screaming, you baby. I told you it'll hurt.'

I put my face closer to the throbbing red wound on his left knee, unwrapped a bandage and put it carefully on him and sighed. That's when I realized the screaming had stopped-- he was staring at me.

'Perry?' I asked.

His face reddened and he turned away.

What a weird guy. I've been noticing his stares ever since the trip started, and they felt a bit odd, as if he were interested in what I had to do. If it weren't for Emily, I wouldn't' have been here in these hills, with a bunch of her crack-headed friends, and of all possible things, camping. During winter. Plus it was snowing lightly, so it's imaginable how cold I was at the time. I stuffed my hands in the pockets of my wind breaker and got up.

All around us were trees, trees, and more trees covered in small patches of white snow. I grabbed a handful of it from the floor and packed it into a small ball, then threw it far, far away, where it would land again. Surrounding me were my big footprints, and I realized how free and happy I felt, and the fun I was having, I laughed with joy. And naturally, Perry was still watching me, as I danced around him in the snow.

'Hey Chels! How's it going there? We can't stick around for too long, the weather's not too smooth here!' I spun around to face my best friend, Emily, and the rest of our camping team who were waiting a touch higher up the hill, where Perry tripped and fell from.

'He's fine, Em, just a small scratch! We'll be up in a sec!' I shouted back.

Emily gave me a thumbs-up, and I turned around to come face to face with only inches away from that certain someone.

'Per-ry!' I finally exploded, 'will you please stop that?! You're starting to creep me out!'

'Me? ... Oh... Sorry.' He picked up my first-aid box for me and started up the hill.

'Hey, wait up!'

And he chose that moment to trip-- again.

I grabbed his arm with my left hand and caught him by the waist with the other. Strange enough, I felt his body stiffen as I steadied him.

'You okay?'

He let his chestnut coloured bangs fall over his clear blue eyes and answered with a small 'yeah'.

I suddenly felt awkward and tried to get off of him. But he simply put his arms around me, and held me closer and tighter, with my arms folded between us.

'Perry, what are you doing? Perry-- Per... Is something wrong?'

He had his head on my shoulder and I felt him shaking his head slightly and murmured, 'Don't let go.'

I laughed once with my eyebrows raised and throat tight, 'You're the one holding me.'

Judging from this position, I could tell something was wrong. I shifted my shoulder so he would move his head.

'Perry, you're acting odd lately. Seriously, this is not you.'

He lifted his head and looked straight into my eyes (which was really creepy). 'Wanna know why?'

I was paralyzed. 'Um... Okay...'

A smile danced on his lips as the corners went up and his eyes softened. 'Because.'

Then he kissed me-- was that what he did? -- He kissed me on the cheek and said, 'That's why.'
