Confused and a little concerned, Kankri stared out the window apprehensively. Cars passed them by and the pair drove steadily on.
Cronus had a “surprise” in store for Kankri. What the “surprise” was Kankri had no clue, but Cronus seemed pleased with himself as he stared ahead at the traffic. “It’ll be fun Kanny,” he said, “You’ll love it!” He said. Kankri had no choice but to trust him and sighed suddenly, feeling the emptiness in the air between them. He didn’t like it.
“Tell me why we’re here again.” Kankri sputtered quietly.
“My god, Kanny, there’s no need to be worried. I’m not takin’ you to a club or some nonsense.” Cronus smirked, glancing over at Kankri, who was leaning tiredly on the door.
“I know Cronus, but I just… am a little concerned with the direction we’re going.”
“Kankri. We’re only driving through downtown. We’re not stopping here.” Cronus said reassuringly.
“Okay, okay. I get it. I’ll be quiet now.” Kankri answered.
The silence hung heavy between them. The drive had been going on for at least half an hour now and Kankri was still unsettled, even in Cronus’s company. He knew Cronus wouldn’t do anything troublesome. And Kankri definitely wanted to believe his assumptions, but since the last surprise tattoo parlor trip, he was uneasy. Cronus glanced over.
“Kankri.”
“Hmm?” Kankri answered tiredly, still staring out the window.
Cronus leaned over and planted a kiss on Kanny’s cheek. Kankri, taken by surprise, could only manage to sputter, “Cronus, the road!”
Cronus laughed. He wasn’t going to crash any time soon. Not with Kanny sitting beside him. He was simply too precious to loose.
Kankri shook his head, trying unsuccessfully to hide his smile. He sat up and leaned over onto Cronus, who rubbed his hand affectionately.
Downtown faded into the suburbs and the suburbs into the open ocean ahead. Kankri was not at all surprised by this, seeing as that Cronus had taken him here thousands of times, and was admittedly a little disappointed that his “big surprise” was yet another trip to the same beach.
“This is it?” Kankri asked, trying not to sound disappointed. Cronus laughed.
“No! You kiddin’ me, Chief? Hell-” Kankri looked at him threateningly- “Um, I mean, heck no. What kind of surprise would that be? Don’t you know me better than that Kanny?”
Kanny felt ashamed of himself for his assumptions, blushing lightly and muttering, “Sorry Cronus.”
“Nah. I got something much cooler in mind.”
