Happily never before

' What are you doing?' I asked my Dad who caught the shotgun.

' You think I don't know how to shoot?'

" It's not as if I care or I'm surprised or something. Just don't mistakenly kill any of us excluding you, Dad ( you know I'm only kidding)"

' Watch out!' I shouted out to Mom who had already seen the incoming bullets that shattered the glass windows.

' They've got a machine fucking machine gun ' Mom yelled.

" Oops, guess I couldn't avoid the swear word. It was Mom that said it though. Whatever"

' Move, move, move' Mom gestured for Ivy and Junior to hide under the table. Then she handed me a rifle, an AR-15 rifle with an empty magazine.

' Mom, c'mon' I complained

' I know you always carry filled extra magazine in your magazine pouch '  she replied back.

" I told you, no one knows me better than my Mom"

" Whoever that was firing kept firing bullets randomly till he was out. He just messed with the wrong family"

' Now ' Mom signaled Dad. He quickly shot three shots through the broken glasses and the last one hit someone. I'm certain.

' Follow me ' Mom said motioning me to back her up.

" I'll tell you one reason you shouldn't bring a kid to a  gun fight in case you've ever thought of doing so"

' Junior, get down' Ivy yelled from behind but it was too late.

" Everything was literally in slow motion. The bullet piercing his small chest, Ivy shouting, Mom so angry, Dad in shock and me- well I didn't know my facial expression this time"

' Junior' Mom roared. She quickly removed the pull ring of the grenade in her arms, throwing it into the car of our assaulters.

'BOOM!' it exploded before Mom could even take cover.

' Call the ambulance!' Ivy kept on shouting. She couldn't even hear herself.

' Mark!' I kept hearing my name unaware of who was calling me.

" Well, I skipped the heroic part I played here. Before Mom could take cover after setting off the grenade, I jumped in front to cover her. It was an involuntary action I swear."

' Mark!'  'Mark!'  ' Junior!' different voices kept calling.

' Probably this is where and how I die' I thought to myself.

"Or I could get lucky like the Deadpool guy or something. At least I'm sure my face was still intact just in case. So, this is the part I passed out. I don't know how long but I guess not for long because I woke up outside mom's house on a stretcher, wearing an oxygen mask. The first thing that came to my head was Junior"

' Ivy...' I called out. Immediately, someone grabbed my hand gently.

" I could recognize that hand wherever I am. All masculine and hairy as always. It was Mr Tenn or rather, Dad. I would have let go immediately but I was so weak."

' Where's Junior' I asked, opening my eyes fully.

' Ivy drove him to the hospital herself, the ambulance was delaying' Dad responded.

"There were cops around and I'm pretty sure they had questions on how we acquired a hand grenade"

' Miss Smith, Can you tell me what happened?' one of the officers questioned Mom.

' We were just having a very happy family reunion ' Mom stated, emphasizing on the 'very'. 'Then these men in the car started shooting at us' she paused and wiped her fake tears.

' Then what happened?' the officer asked impatiently. ' You didn't call the police?'

' We couldn't reach for the cell phone because they kept firing at us' Mom responded, still sobbing.

" Okay, another thing about my Mom, she's a terrible liar. Terrible as in she's so good at it. I just hope she tells her story one day. I'm pretty sure hers would be more interesting than mine"

' What about the grenade and the dead guy in front of the car '

' I don't know. My grandson just got shot and you are asking me all these questions. I'm really traumatized right now and I don't even know if he'd make it or not. My son is over there too almost dead ' Mom said, still sobbing.

' I'm so sorry ma'am but we need this info...' the officer was still talking when his colleague cut him short. He probably had fallen for mom's crocodile tears

' We'll ask some other time' his colleague whispered to him. ' Let's go, it's about to rain'

' But, you know the men who attack are part of a syndicate we've been trailing. We can get a lead from here if I keep asking' the officer whispered to his colleague.

' Can't you see how pathetic and worn out this woman is from shock. Let's go' his colleague said under his breath and they both entered their car and drove off. Immediately they drove off, Mom turned to my direction.

' Mark, I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. I dragged your father into this lifestyle, he dragged you into it and now Junior is about to pay the price' Mom said grabbing my other hand gently.

" To be honest, it wasn't her fault, neither my Dad's. It's fate. Mom didn't make herself the niece or cousin to a drug lord or very beautiful for Dad to fall for her. The fact is that the two of them getting married was never meant to be a happily ever after stuff. No matter how many generations after them. They'll still be family to a drug lord lineage."
