I'm outside of the church where I had went to daycare and pre-k when I was younger for no other reason than community service. I need to complete my hours to graduate so I decided to come back here. I always had fond memories of this place and thought that coming back wouldn't be such a bad idea. I had a meeting with the principal of the school to go over what I am going to do while I'm here so I buzz the buzzer and wait for her at the door.
She comes to open the door and gives me a warm smile, we say our greetings and she walks me through the building to her office. As we're walking I notice a couple of things. Firstly not a single thing has changed, as if it was frozen in time it was exactly like I remembered it, same pictures on the walls, same decorations, same rooms, same everything. Hell even the staff hasn't changed, they all look exactly the same after all these years. It brought back some of the little memories that I had forgotten from it being such a long time ago. But the other thing that I noticed was that the aura of the place felt much different, and even though it looked the same it didn't feel the same. There were way more locked doors than I remember and more mysterious dark hallways, it all of a sudden felt so secretive. But knowing that these doors were most likely locked because they were used by the church, which makes sense because they share the same building, makes me push the thoughts to the back of my mind and continue walking through the halls to her office.
Once we get there we go through the paper work and all the other requirements I need to go through for the service and then I ask her about it. "Ms. Faith, how is it that this place hasn't changed in the last like 12 years?" "Oh you noticed?" She said excitedly. "I like to leave this place the same throughout the years because when my students come back when they grow up like you have, it gives them a sense of nostalgia." And she was right, seeing this place look the same as the day I left did give it an overwhelmingly nostalgic feel. "Do you remember any of this?" She questioned. "Well I remember bits and pieces of being in class and my mom talks about my time here a lot so the stories I hear from her are what I most remember. Actually there is this story she always tells that includes me playing with these letter blocks if you remember what I'm talking about." She points to a box behind me that had the blocks I was talking about, they were practically in the same place I remember them being. She lit up and said "Yes I remember, you would come in here and play with these letter blocks all the time and spell things out while me and your mother were talking, even as a child you we're so bright." It made me smile how excited she was when talking about the past and the fact that she still remember such random details from that long ago, talking to her made me realize how much she really cares about her students, even the ones from a long time ago like me.
After talking about old times and finishing up the paper work I was ready to start helping out around the school and with the kids. I already knew my way around so I just went looking around to go see where people needed help and I ended up in Ms. Bow's class. I slowly open the door and peek my head in. As soon as I stepped in the class went silent and everyone turned their heads to look in my direction. "Hi Ms Bow, I'm Siyn Blaine and I'll be volunteering and helping out here and there for the next few weeks." "Siyn?" she asked then paused. "Oh my goodness you've gotten big, do you remember me? Come in, come in." she said. "Kids this is Ms. Siyn and she'll be helping us out here for a little bit so everyone be good be okay?" "Okay" the kids said back in unison. All of this caught me off guard, I was surprised that she even remembered me because she never taught any of my classes and on top of that being called "Miss" makes me feel unbelievably old. This shouldn't be the case for a seventeen year old but it was kinda funny in a way, being seen as old to these young kids but still young to these older teachers. It was also funny to see their curious faces, since visitors aren't allowed in the building I'm the first new person they've seen here in a long time.
The first day of helping out was so overwhelming, but none the less I enjoy it here. At the end of the day while I walk down the hall to leave the almost empty building I see a strange figure from a distance moving swiftly from classroom to classroom. Who is that?
