Summer evening drops fell from the sky as my feet clattered shakily against the pavement in a foolish attempt to outrun. Behind me I could still hear the stoic panting of a large animal, it's eyes rolling and mouth watering as it ran after me on all fours.
"Please," I shakily said, not daring to look behind me, "Please be a good dog and go away!"
The hound creature had paid no mind to my pleas of course, only snapping it's massive jaws at my arms and legs as it grew near. My own lack of breath started to catch up with me. Taking a sharp turn and only stumbling slightly, I used a fence to prop myself up and jump over. A contorted chuckle caught my attention, distracting me from the peace I finally felt from getting out of the hound's way. "Having troubles with the dog again today eh Akemi?" I shot a glare in the man's direction. "Shut up Bastion. The stupid demon does this every day. No thanks to you." The blackened out face just laughed. " This is my land is it not? Technically I'm saving you by letting you hop the fence huh?"
I sighed and slowly nodded my head in defeat.
"You're right, but c'mon, you could do more than just stand there and laugh."
The shadow just snickered, "Why not? It's entertaining to me."
I gave him a small pout while someone casually floated out of the backdoor.
" What are you little brats talking about this time?" She yawned rubbing her eyes timidly.
"Sis, you're finally awake!" Bastion exclaimed, bubbles flowing from his eyelids.
"Hey there..." I said shakily.
His sister scared me. Whether it being the complete lack of legs that seemed to have a never-ending flow of blood from her stumps she paid absolutely no mind to, or her large bird-like wings that could easily carry two people off, hopefully one not being me. She was stern, intimidating, and very protective over her younger brother, who is my friend Bastion. That combination was enough to make me slowly back away if her eyes weren't already trained on me.
"Mr. Tokoro," His sister glared, the gaze seemingly striking my soul. I gulped, pushing down the lump forming in my throat.
"Yes 'mam?" Her eyes softened slightly.
"Call me Miss Weller." I nodded abruptly.
"Oh come off it sis, you're not that old Fuji, geez." Bastion complained. Miss Weller just sighed and ruffled his hair.
" Think for a moment won't you? I'm still a teacher, the little ones need to learn respect, starting with you calling me by my formal name." Bastion just whined, "But that's no fun," he complained dragging out the "n".
"it makes you sound so boring and OLD. Eugh, you're barely five years older!" She smirked playfully back.
"Just a sign that you need to get your life together by my age then right?"
I watched the interaction from afar, slightly more relaxed as it seemed she was in a better mood today. Dealing with her wrath is a whole thing I never look forward to.
"Yeah, yeah, I still know how to have fun, how horrible," Bastion claimed sarcastically. "Well I have friends, and as a matter of fact I'm taking Akemi here to the park today!" I froze once my name was called, feeling Miss Weller's judgmental view slowly shift over to mine.
"Is that so?" Bastion nodded eagerly in agreement as I wished I could disappear. She let out a huff instead.
"Well I'm afraid I can't stop you two today, just don't get into trouble this time, I have to teach the little ones in the woods today. I won't be able to stop your, excuse my language, sorry asses today if you end up getting lost or beat to a pulp by a bird you pissed off."
Bastion gave his sister a slightly peeved glare.
"We aren't that bad!" Miss Weller rolled her eyes in clear disagreement.
"Hm, alright then, I'll take your word for it. Just stay safe okay? I'm going inside to get ready, I won't be here when you get back, if you ever do." She planted a chaste kiss on his forehead and floated back indoors on her soft wings. Bastion turned to me with an ecstatic look on his face, beautiful pink eyes sparkling. I groaned.
"YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS RIGHT?"
"Your sister still hates me for that one time."
"IT MEANS WE GET FREE ROAM OF THE PLACE TODAY!!!" Bastion jumped up in the air excitedly. I groaned.
"We're screwed, whatever is gonna happen you're going to drag me into it and make her hate me more. I'm already on thin ice!"
Bastion was already too busy listing off things they could both do today, not forgetting to include instances that would make his sister fume. I sighed and walked up to him, putting a hand on his shoulder coolly.
"Let's start off with small things first shall we?"
