No words were spoken amongst them as they raced. All that could be heard was the stampede of their feet rhymed with their heavy breath and the occasional branch that slapped against skin. Techno led the way, cloak billowing behind as he moved. It was almost a wonder that he was able to move so quickly with such an extravagant thing weighing on his shoulders. Back when Techno wasn't so hard, Tommy had tried on his cape once, and they all shared a laugh at how he was buried in it. Of course, Tommy made a silly joke about how the cloak "weighed him down".Following close behind him was George. He was far more nimble and quiet in the way that he ran in comparison to Techno, who seemed to split the trees making his presence clear with his strides. George had always been the sneakiest of the Dream team behind Dream of course. The only difference was it seemed Dream chose when he wanted to be undetected, whereas George did it quite naturally. George though keeping up with Techno continued to glance back at Dream and Wilbur especially, concern written all over his face for the injured one, and once again, avoiding eye contact with Dream.
Dream was in the back with Wilbur, making sure he wouldn't get too far behind. He made notice of George's glances back at them both and forced the jealous feeling gnawing away at him down. He couldn't bring himself to look at Wilbur nor think about the bond he'd seemingly made with George in his absence. He couldn't will himself to think about it as it hurt too much. He was furious with himself that their conversation had been cut short. He wound never get another chance again.
Finally, when they neared the edge of the forest that surrounded the phantom's mountain home, they began to hear thrashing from above. Techno, having only the time to pull out his sword when down fell 4 bodies from the treetops. They hit the ground with a thud, followed by a multiple of leaves and twigs that were disrupted by their boisterous movements. Bad landed on his feet however and was already leaning down to pick a twig out of Sapnap's hair.
"Tommy!" Wilbur called as Techno concealed his weapon once again.
"There's no time to catch up! They're right behind us!" Tommy shouted, scrambling to his feet. George however had already jumped into Bad's arms. He didn't say a word but in times like these actions spoke louder. Bad wrapped him up in the hug and a small sigh came audibly from one of them. Dream put a hand on Bad's shoulder after a minute. He glanced up at him. Dream lifted his mask and gave him his brightest smile. The others seemed blinded by it.
Not one of them could have broken the moment of reunion, which is why it was the screech of a phantom that all had them jump out of their skin. They hurried one another along, Wilbur finding the strength to ruffle up Tommy's hair before they continued to move forward to which Tommy finally noticed his brothers arm.
Once again, they were on the run, unable to communicate or share their knowledge as their lungs were already occupied, filling them up with air as they ran. The sun began to sink over the trees as they went, Dream noting this and feeling a familiar anxiety arise.
"It's almost night, we will never be able to outrun them!" Sapnap said. It had been exactly what Dream had been thinking.
"You lot outran them last time did you not?" Tubbo's voice rang out, coming in panted rhythms that matched his pace.
"We did, but things were different last time," George called back.
"For one, they were a LOT further back!" Sapnap chimed in.
"We're going to have to come up with a new plan!" Dream called from the back. Sapnap and George went quiet to let Dream think as they began to rack all the possible outcomes in their own minds that wouldn't end in their deaths.
Dream glanced back. There were too many behind them, they simply wouldn't be able to fight them all off. And now the phantoms had a real reason to hate them, as this was the second time they'd been disrespected by Dream and his comrades.
The grandchildren of the ones who Dream had killed flew with certainty that this would be the day they take him down.
He thought of the bridge that he and George had crossed. George had been terrified of what he could not see then. And now, the one Tubbo had make was not straight forward, had uneven levels, and one had to be able to see in order to cross it in the speed they needed.
As he glanced forward, he saw that Techno and Sapnap had already taken out torches to hold while they ran. There would be no way they would be able to cross that bridge as slowly as they had the first time. He concluded they wouldn't make it out alive.
His eyes then met Georges. He didn't mean to, nor did the other. George might have just been looking back to check on Wilbur again, yet their eyes caught one another. George's blue and brown eyes lit up the darkening sky as they pierced into Dream. He couldn't fight the gentle blush forming on his cheek, that could easily be blamed on their trialing run. There was something about this time that confirmed it in Dream's heart. George looked back forward and their gaze lost. Dream gripped at his green hood and called out.
"Go to the bridge!" he yanked his hood up.
Techno did not need to be told twice as he redirected the fastest line to the bridge. Down they ran, through the trees slanted on the uneven ground, to the small bridge that Tubbo had clumsily crafted earlier that day.
I miss the fluff sooooo much!!! Don't worry they're gonna be talking again soon I promise 😪
