Chapter 1- Throwback
“Caleb Jackson, I am arresting you for the attempted murder of Scott Carlson. You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence.” A rather burly looking police officer read these Miranda rights to my highly intoxicated 17 year old twin brother before carting him off into a Police car.
So much for this being the perfect summer, but like with a race, you always fall at the last hurdle.
4 weeks earlier…
“Tallie, we have something to tell you, and we don’t think you’re going to like it.”
There are only three people who would dare to turn up at my house at 3o’clock on a Sunday morning, risking waking the rest of my family and facing the wrath they’d receive from my twin brother Caleb, and they would be my ‘squad’. Comprising of my best friend since birth Brad, the hottest girl in the south-west of England, Bee and her older brother Harley. The look on their very sober faces tells me this wasn’t one of their usual ploys to get me to skip my curfew and go out with them. Which concerns me because when we’re together we act as if we don’t have a care in the world, we are the closest people can be as a group without being blood related. The optimism in the group is high, even when talking about serious issues, and this is what worries me, the last time I saw Bee look like this was 4 years ago when Harley got ran over and ended up in hospital with a lung puncture.
“What is it guys? And if you’re going to say the huge problem is you’re out of alcohol and you’re too drunk to drive then you’re assholes because you’re freaking me out.”
“Maybe it’s best we go inside for this, you’ll probably want a pillow to punch when we tell you.” Brad always was the most sensible person in the group and if he thinks I’m going to be upset then nine out of ten times he is right.
Once we’re all sat comfortably on my double bed they nominate Bee to tell me their revelations as she seems to have a knack for being the bearer of bad news.
“Well, you know we were going to Neil’s party tonight. We went but decided to stay sober so we’d be able to see you afterwards, anyway we were there and everything was average, drunken teenagers rubbing up against eachother, people doing bongs in the bath and all that, well I went into Neil’s sister’s bedroom to get a towel for someone who was throwing up and that’s when I saw Scott..” I cut her off before she could say anything else. Scott is my boyfriend of 3 years, we’re known as the school’s ‘Super Couple’ as between us there aren’t many people who aren’t friends with us, plus we were pretty much perfect for eachother.
“You saw Scott? What was he doing?” I’m a worrier, as optimistic as I try to be whenever I hear something I always assume the worst.
“He was in bed with that blond skank Kristina. I’m so sorry.”
“Whoa that was a little blunt Bee, you could’ve let her down a bit easier than that.” Harley reprimanded his little sister whilst I just sat there trying to digest the information I’d just been given. Scott cheated on me? It doesn’t make sense, why would he do that? I could feel the tears roll down my and before I knew it I was being pulled into Brad’s chest and he just let me sob until we all fell asleep.
