Kaori sits on the swing, content, watching as her 8 year old sister Eunji runs around the vacant park. Glancing down at her phone, she connects her Airpods to her phone and turns the volume on her music all the way up. As Eunji enjoys her fun, Kaori scrolls through Instagram, looking up to check on her sister every once in a while.
She keeps scrolling and does her 'routined' glance and check, but gets confused when her sister is nowhere to be seen. Standing up from her swing, the 13 year old walks around the park. "Eunji? Where'd you go?' Kaori asks, looking around. She chooses not to panic, remembering that her sister likes to hide in the forest that's right next to the park. Kaori turns her music down and calls out again.
Nothing.
"Eunji, c'mon I'm not playing!" She shouts, beginning to worry.
Suddenly, she hears a distant scream and starts to run in it's general direction.
"EUNJI!!" she yells, and ends up getting lost momentarily. Seeing her sister, Kaori stops at the edge of the small forest, facing the road, unable to move due to the scene before her.
A hooded man is carrying Eunji with one hand over her mouth, as she thrashes in the man's arms. Frozen in place, Kaori watches as her little sister is thrown into the back of a van and the man drives away.
Oh my god. No no no no no no no. Not Eunji. No.
Thinking fast with tears streaming down her face, she snaps a quick picture of the retreating vehicle's license plate. Dialing her mother's number, the phone rings for a while before going to voicemail."Fuck" She mutters under her breath. Kaori calls her brother Kenzou and he answers after 4 rings.
"Hello?"
"Ken? Ken I- I need you to come- I need you to come pick me up. Eunji-"
"Wait what's wrong? You sound out of breath, are you okay?" He interrupts, hearing how frantic she sounds.
"No, Eunji- I-" Kaori hesitates. "Eunji was kidnapped. Please, I-" she breaks down into tears. "I need you."
The line goes quiet as Kenzou lets what Kaori said sink in. She continues to sob, and Kenzou hops up from his friend's couch. "Hey Ken, where you going man? We're in the middle of a game!" His friend asks, and he waves him off, rushing out the door.
"Okay, Kaori, where's mom?"
"U-um I don't- I don't know. I called her but sh-she didn't answer the phone. She should be ho-home." She replies, stammering.
"Of course. I'll be there in about 15 minutes, just hold on, okay? Did you see the license plate number on whatever vehicle?"
"Yeah but I-I don't know if the picture was clear or not."
"Okay call the police and tell them what happened."
"No, I- can you please stay on the line until you get here? I don't want to be alone right now."
"Sure, I'll stay on the line."Like he said, Kenzou stays on the phone until he picks Kaori up in his car. They call the police and tell them everything as they ride home.
As the two walk inside the front door, they're overwhelmed by the scent of alcohol. "Mom?" Kaori timidly calls out. Kenzou does the same and they walk further inside. They find her asleep on the couch, with empty beer bottles littering the living room floor. "Damn it. Mom, wake up." Ken says, lightly shaking her. Kaori stands back, afraid of what will happen next. As her brother continues to attempt and wake up their mother, she eyes a family photo and nearly bursts into tears once again.
Their mother finally wakes up and sits all the way up. "Oh hey Kenny baby, Kaori, when did you get home? Where's Eunji?" She adds, noticing her youngest isn't in the room. The two look down at the ground, and Kaori answers with "she's gone."
