Her teeth were crooked beyond a point of being repaired. The metal wires in her mouth were bent and twisted out of order, in a futile attempt to pull her teeth together. She had them for months, with no results showing.
Needlessly, all the other children teased her. They would point and laugh and call her every mean name they could think of, including him. If he referred to her as "brace-face" or "metal-mouth", all his friends would laugh, and he would feel a sense of accomplishment. To him it was nothing, if insulting her made others laugh, he could continue doing it with no problem.
One day after school, he decided to follow her home. He would call out the worst names he could think of, including "train-tracks" and "twisty". She ignored him, but walked away faster. He continued to follow her, even when she made a sharp turn into the woods. "It's getting dark, you better come back here," he laughed. "Are you afraid of me?"
She stopped walking. In a heartbeat she had him pinned up against a tree. Panic filled his eyes as he saw her teeth begin to push out of her mouth, forming jagged tops and breaking the brackets clean off the surface of her teeth. The contorted wires fell from her mouth.
"I'm not the one who should be afraid."
