Thanks for the loveley comments! I wasn't sure about the idea, but you inspired me to keep writing :) Here we go again!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I woke up from an arm hitting my face. Alarmed from the past weeks I jumped up, ready to fight creatures, but then I realized that it was Joe's arm. He was dreaming pretty badly, shivering and whimpering. I hestitated, but then I woke him up by shaking him softly.
"Joe! Joe, wake up!"
He opened his eyes in shock and stared at me, "ZOE!"
"No, no, everything is okay, she's still downstairs. Shhh, calm down!"
He breathed heavily, his hair sweaty from his sleeping horror. He was still shaking, I lied a hand on his shoulder, trying to calm him down. He buried his face in his hands and slowly breathed normally again. I watched him and suddenly realized that he was sobbing. I sat down next to him and pulled him in a hug.
"Shhh, she's okay. It was just a dream."
"They ripped her apart! There was blood everywhere!"
"That's terrible, but it was just a dream."
"I'm sorry for waking you up."
"No, no, it's okay, just try to sleep now. We need every rest we can have."
He chuckeled bitterly, "I don't think that I will ever "rest" again."
We lied down again, still a little shaky, but a bit calmer now. I could understand him better than I wanted. All the nightmares, the flashbacks about my parents trying to protect me by distracting the infected. My mother screaming, my dad telling me to run and never look back. I missed them so bad and the only thing that reminded me of them were my father's dog tags that the people at the Brighton control centre had given me. I wore them around my neck, always, everywhere, although I knew that they were dangerous. There was nothing easier to grab for a runner than a necklace. I didn't care. If I died then with my parents.
Jim woke us up the next morning. Tanya and him were trying to make a halfway pleasant breakfast while Joe woke Caspar and Zalfie up. I checked Zoe's wound which already looked better. It wasn't swollen anymore and the infection risk seemed to be lower aswell.
"Looks good. You should be okay soon.", I smiled encouragingly.
"It feels better, too. The stiches hurt a little though."
"We can take them out in a week, but before the wound could rip open again. And don't worry if it itches, then it's healing."
"Thank you, Skye. I felt pretty bad the last week, but now I'm at least concious."
It was the same with, just socially. The lack of human contact had made me numb, but now I was doing something useful. Again Zoe was giving me new hope like she always does.
We assembeled for breakfast after Jim and Tanya had finished. He seemed a little more peaceful than the day before, he even offered me some orange juice. Orange juice! It felt like drinking gold after these weeks of cold water. Joe sat next to me, the sleepless night was more than visible in the bags under his eyes. I wanted to say something comforting, but what was there left?
After breakfast Jim, Caspar, Joe and me decided to get outside to find some new provisions. Alfie would stay with the girls, because Zoe of course wasn't able to carry much and Tanya wouldn't leave her.
I looked around, "Guys, how do we get out? There are infected everywhere, believe me, without them I wouldn't be here."
Jim smiled, "Plan B."
