The fresh morning weather welcomed me as I got outside. Taking a deep breath of pure air I took my surroundings in, all the beautiful green plants and colorful flowers around me, their sweet perfume filling my nostrils, the wind brushing softly on my face and making my hair dance with it, the beautiful melody of the little birds mixed with the sound of water flowing from the small river that passes near my house

I start walking to the stables to get h/n for a ride, since it's Sunday I don't have the boring etiquette classes and my parents are not home, meaning that I have the day free and can pass it with Ella

She has been a little ausent since her father married again four months ago. I don't know much about her stepmother and stepsisters and I never saw them either, I only know what Ella tells me and what she says it's not very pleasant to hear, they sound mean, spoiled and maybe a little cold-hearted, but she tells me that it doesn't matter, she's going to treat them like her mother taught her to treat everyone and she still has the love and support of her father

I get h/n out of the stables and walk to the front of Ella's house "H/n you have to stay here, I'll be right back with Ella and Major" they neigh back and I peek my head through the entrance gate checking if anyone is there, luckily there is no one so I do my way discreetly to the garden trying to be somehow invisible to not run into Ella's new family members

What I did not know was that I catched the eye of a beautiful woman standing by her bedroom window, intrigued by my presence in her property, her eyes following my every move

Arriving at the garden I look around finding Ella with her back to me, I sneak behind her trying to be as silent as possible "Boo!", "Aaaaah!!" she screams jumping a little forward and then turning around to see who caused her almost an heart attack "Y/n! Why did you do that?!" at this point I couldn't contain myself any longer so I burst out laughing, she hits my arm playfully "It's not funny, stop laughing" she says trying to contain her own laugh, I calm down and look to her "Sorry Ella, but it was very funny" she narrows her eyes at me "Sure it was, very amusing" she says sarcastically and I smile at her "So are you ready?" I ask her "Yes, let me just get Major", "Alright, I'll be at the entrance gate with h/n waiting for you two" she nods and leaves to the stables and I go back to h/n

Riding through the forest I look at Ella and remember the prairie that her mother used to take us to "Ella?", "Yes?", "Do you want to go to the prairie?", "Oh, yes, please!" she answers me excitedly making me giggle "The last one arriving there is a rotten egg!" I say making h/n start running "Hey! That's not fair! C'mon Major, let's show them how it's done!" she says and Major starts running too

"No!" I protest while arriving at the prairie, behind Ella "And that's how it's done" she says proud for winning the race "You had luck", "Sure it was, y/n" I look at her with a playful smile and she laughs "Come on, let's go to our place" she says dismounting Major and I do the same, we walk to the still beautiful tree that we used to have picnics under with her mother and father "Beautiful as always" I say smiling softly, a tear running down my cheek, I quickly wipe it away not wanting Ella to see me crying

We sit down under the tree like we used to do, the soft breeze hitting our faces and the perfume of the flowers filling our nostrils taking us back in time for when we were dancing in between them, her mother singing and dancing with us while her father was sitting under the tree watching us with amusement plastered on his face

"What are you thinking about?" Ella asks bringing me back to reality "Oh, I was thinking about the good times we passed here, dancing and singing with... Your parents" I look at her with a tender expression which she answers with a beautiful smile "I miss those times" she says in almost a whisper "Me too"

After a while Ella starts singing in a low tone her mother's favourite song

Lavender's green, dilly, dilly
Lavender's blue
When I am king, dilly, dilly
You shall be queen

I smile hearing the beautiful melody and start singing along with her closing my eyes and imagining it's her mother singing to us

I open my eyes and look over to Ella who is already looking at me smiling "I missed your voice" she says and I look down smiling, I haven't sang since her mother passed away, it brings too many memories and it pains me, because I can't go back to those happy times "I know it hurts you too" she says embracing me tenderly from the side, I rest my head on her shoulder, we stay in comfortable silence and then we decide to get back home

"I enjoyed today very much, y/n" she says walking with Major besides her "Me too and I promise that I'll try to pass more time with you" she smiles sweetly at me and gives me a tight hug "I know, y/n/n, and I promise I'll try to do so too" she says letting me go "Oh! I almost forgot! We're going to give a small party later, where we play some table games, like poker, and when I say we, I mean my stepmother", "Hmm... And?", "And... I was thinking if you would have the generosity of joining us?", "By joining us you mean joining you?" I say with a chuckle "Well, yes..." she says smiling shyly "Please, y/n, would you join us?" she pleads "It will be my pleasure to join you", "Ah, thank you!" she says jumping on me for a hug, again, I let out a laugh and wrap my arms around her

"Alright, I have to go. I'll be back here around 9 pm, is that alright?", "Yes, that's perfect", "Good, until then, Ella", "Until then, y/n"

Ella's pov

I say goodbye to y/n and take Major to the stables, when I'm done I go to the back door of the house, opening it and walking into the kitchen "Good afternoon, miss" says Rose, the kitchen chef "Good afternoon, Rose", "Are you hungry, miss?", "Oh, yes I am and, please, you know you can call me Ella" I say putting a little grape on my mouth, she answers with a soft smile and a nod

I walk to the living room and to my surprise there's no one in sight, I grab a book and sit in a couch near the window, opening it slightly to hear the beautiful melody from the birds outside, but before I could open the book someone stops me "Ella?" I look to the person and it's my stepmother "Yes, Madame?", "Who was that girl with you?" I froze, she saw me with y/n "Oh, uhm... She's- Uhm... She's my best friend, y/n" she looks to me with a curious expression "I don't see her around very much", "That's because we got a little bit distant a couple months ago", "Hmm, why's that?", "Nothing special, we were just very busy" I answer her, she nods back and then I remember that I have to tell her that I invited y/n to her party "And... Uhm... she's coming to the party later, you don't mind, do you?" I ask her hopefully "No, I do not mind" she answers and I am a bit shocked "Oh, that's... Good" her lips curl in what seems a small smile and then she walks away

Right, that was really unexpected, I was prepared to hear her saying that I shouldn't invite someone she doesn't know to her party, a million questions start to pop on my mind, but I shake my head and instead focus on the book that is on my hands
