“Hey, I’m so glad you could meet me here.” Jake said as he held the door for me.
We walked into the little coffee shop downtown and ordered.
“Chai Tea, please?” I asked. I turned to Jake and waited for him to order.
He shook his head. “Nothing for me, thanks.”
“Are you okay? You seem…” I paused searching for the right word. “Distant.”
“Yeah, I’m fine. I just… um… can we talk?”
“Sure. What about, babe?” I replied leaning in to kiss him on the cheek. He slowly turned away to find a table. I grabbed my cup and followed him, slightly annoyed. We sat down at small round table by the window. My favorite spot.
“I think we need to take a break. Ya know? See other people?” as soon as the words came out of his mouth, my stomach dropped. My eyes started welling up with tears.
“EMMA! Wait! St-“ I ran out of the coffee shop as soon as I could. I braced the damp, cold air of London and ran. I didn’t even know where I was going. I just, ran. Before I could stop myself, I ran straight into traffic. When I looked up and saw headlights, I froze. I suddenly knew how deer felt right before they got shot. There was cement in my shoes and I was certain that I was taking my last breath. I braced myself for the pain, but it never came. Instead, I felt a gentle touch on my shoulder. I jumped, scared by the loud sound of cars all around me.
“JESUS! I’m so sorry babe! Are you alright?!” I didn’t recognize the accent. It sounded a bit… Irish? I looked up to see a very handsome blonde with gorgeous blue eyes.
“I – I’m fine. Thanks though.” I stuttered through my tears.
“Here, let me give you a lift. Your knee looks terrible!“ the boy pointed to a huge scrape on my knee.
“Yeah, I’m fine! I got it! I’ll just walk home.” I replied, not wanting to cause any trouble.
“No, we have to take you home. It’s the least we could do! I almost ran over you!!” he begged.
“We?” I questioned him.
“Yeah, my girlfriend, Maggie’s in the car.” He answered, pointing to the passenger seat. “Oh and by the way, I’m Niall.” There were sparkles in his eyes.
“I’m Emma. Nice to meet you Niall.” I said
“Here, let me help you up. We’re starting traffic!” Maggie said while lifting me off the wet pavement and leading me to the car.
