PROLOGUE
Gunshots echoed through the hallways of the high school. The rookie cop spun around, her green eyes narrowing a bit. She had been at the school that afternoon for a presentation on how to protect yourself. She had left her gun in her police SUV though as she wasn't allowed to bring it into the school.
"Get down!" she ordered the class of ninth graders that she had been talking to.
Once she was sure that the teacher had his class on the floor she slipped out the door, pulling it closed behind her. What she wouldn't give to have her partner there watching her back. She clicked on her radio and quickly explained the situation as she crept down the hallway, glad to see other doors closed. She didn't want to see any causalities from someone wanting to play the hero.
The cop heard angry voices as she approached the gym. She was going into this situation blind, as she didn't have any idea how many were in the gym or if there was more then one gun. She leaned against the door and peeked into the small window, keeping her head down. She could just make out two people arguing and a third on the floor that appeared to be moaning in pain.
"Come on, man, what's your problem?" the dark haired guy demanded.
"You and that witch of a girlfriend are my problem!" the olive skinned teen snarled, waving the gun around. "I'm tired of bring pushed around by you hotshot jocks!"
"Hey, hey, easy now," he said, holding his hands up as the other teen aimed the gun at his chest.
The girl was still moaning in pain, gripping her leg. The cop knew she had to move fast if she wanted to avoid any casualties. There was no time to wait for backup. She took a deep breath and pushed the door open a crack, slipping inside. If she could just get behind him she could disarm him. She quietly walked on her tiptoes, trying not to make a sound. The two teens were still arguing.
She had just about reached him when the teen spun around. He growled angrily when he saw the cop. She quickly held up her hands, but it was too late. She could see in his eyes that there would be no reasoning with him. If she could just keep him talking.
"You don't want to do this," she said gently. "It will ruin your life. You have so much ahead of you."
The teen laughed. "Like heck I do!" he snarled. "My life is already ruined. Thanks to people like them!" He swung the gun back at the dark haired teen.
"No!" the cop shouted.
She suddenly gasped as burning pain tore through her abdomen. She collapsed to her knees, a hand going to her side. She heard the gunfire again, cried out in pain, and collapsed, blood covering the floor around her. She coughed hoarsely as her eyes drifted shut. She had failed.
