It had been over two months now; two months since my parents have been killed. That’s what I thought to myself now, staring up at my ceiling, laying on my bed. Well, it really wasn’t my ceiling. Or my bed. It was my best friend’s guest room, which has now turned into my room, since exactly two months ago. Her family, and the little of mine I had left, have always been close and they immediately took me in when my parents both died during a shooting in a few states over on their vacation. Her parents were in the middle of getting the adoption forms.
"How about we get your room fixed personalized this weekend, Brandi?” I looked up to see my soon-to-be legal -guardian mother walk in.
I turned to look at Mrs. Field, Rachel, as I called her. I just nodded at her, not smiling at all. Smiling. That wasn’t something I’ve done in a while.
She looked at me sympathetically, and came over and wrapped her arms around me, sitting next to me on my bed. I sighed and said;
“It’s been two-“
“I know.” She cut me off, and just squeezed me tighter.
“Brandi? Are you ready?” my best friend Gia walked in. “I’m leaving now, okay?”
She looked back and fourth between her mother and I, gripping onto each other, sighed, and joined in.
“I know.” She added before joining us. We didn’t even have to say anything.
Gia and Rachel left the room silently together, and Gia announced she was leaving again. I wasn’t in the mood for answering her though, but she knew I heard. I turned over on my side and looked at my clock. I just glared at it. It was a cheerleader- themed clock. That was where Gia was headed off too now, cheerleading practice. Coach understood I couldn’t make it today. I guess I’ll just go out for a coffee now.
I pulled my windbreaker I got from cheerleading over my head, slipped on my moccasins, and put my brown hair into a messy bun. Who cares what I look like, I’m going to Starbucks.
And I didn’t wear Uggs because people would laugh at how white I am.
I told Rachel I was going out for a few and would be back soon. I got into my truck that was parked at the end of Gia’s long gravel driveway, and drove off.
I put the texting lock on my phone; safety first.
I was listening to the radio.
I remember, it was a One Direction song.
I don’t remember anything else except my life flashing before my eyes.
And seeing the face of a curled -headed teenage boy as his car came into contact with mine.
